The first rearview mirror is usually credited to Dorothy Levitt, a British race car driver, in 1909.
She advised women drivers in her book to carry a small hand mirror and use it to see behind them a concept that led directly to the rearview mirror's adoption in cars later.

Canadian-American film actress
star and inventor Florence Lawrence designed an "auto-signaling arm" for turn signals and a mechanical brake signal around 1914, but she did not patent these inventions and received no credit or profit for them. Her innovative designs were precursors to modern turn signals and brake lights, demonstrating her practical and inventive nature, though her contributions have been largely forgotten
