I'm worried about the risk of becoming a vegetable and whether that's really a good way to leave. I know none are, but I wanted to know if there is a way to circumvent the symptoms, or at least alleviate them, and if there is a way to speed up the process.

It's a peaceful method bc you will become unconscious very quickly and death follows shortly after. There's hardly any SI disturbing, just you have to go inside the prepared room/tent. You will not have a feeling of suffocation. CO docks onto the blood cells in the lungs and is not exchanged anymore unlike CO2, that leads to inner suffocation.

For a quick death you'd need to make sure you have min 8k ppm better 10k ppm CO concentration in your room but that is possible with charcoal.

Yes there are risks of becoming a veggie but the risks are low if you plan the attempt properly.

Technically, CO is not a single method, it's a group of methods that differ in the way of how CO is generated and how it's consumed. Some suggested methods produce relatively low concentrations of CO along with impurities like CO2 (charcoal and car exhaust methods) and NO2 (car exhaust method) that may cause unpleasant feelings.

I wonder how easy CO may be produced in reaction Zn + CaCO3 recommended in PPeH. So far I couldn't find a good description of it and a video that would demonstrate how it happens.

Would be interesting at what temperature that reaction starts and whether it is exotherm at some point? Having an electric heater or gas burner running after being dead could be a risk.
