Is it really a privilege to be suicidal?
A product of too much "peace time" ?

There are people in the world who think that because you don't know what real struggle is that you don't realize how good you have it and that suicide is a drastic notion. It's a fair argument when you consider that at this point in time in human history we have it better than our ancestors ever did. We have so much to be grateful for in infrastructure, technology, and just quality of life in general. Other than in cases of terminal illness and disability, we should all be appreciative.

I guess I can agree but that doesn't change the fact that I want to be dead. Thoughts?

the real privilege is sitting back in an armchair and waving a pipe around pretentiously, talking about how the population with the balls of steel to take their fate into their own hands are actually naive, spoiled, etc.

how many people talking this same, tired bs just feel inferior because theyd never have the gall to splatter their own brain matter on the wall?

even for the dumbest reasons. if someone successfully hangs themself over a video game, holy shit do i have no room for anything but awe. they did on impulse what i couldnt do in years with the most torturous diagnoses known to man.

Other people having it worse, now or then, rarely cheers anyone up.

I used to think depression was a first world problem, but evidence doesn't support this. Some are more prone to suffer relative to their peers, it's just better disguised as "reasonable" in poorer people (not just poorer in terms of wealth).

This isn't to say circumstance is irrelevant. If more people had access to decent treatment, and if society was more accommodating, the level of suffering would be much less.

my life has always been more boring, sad, stagnant, and lonely than most of my other peers. i've always compared myself to other people because i've always seen myself as the one that never succeeds at anything. i feel like i'm the kind of person people look back at and say "at least i'm not them" because i'm such a loser in comparison. i don't care if i'm privileged because i feel like i'm a worthless person. i don't feel like i can be happy. i just feel tired of having all this time to myself.

That's because history writes out much of the people who kill themselves. They often times didn't pass on their genes, they didn't matter.

Even in the modern day, that's the case. Every 11 minutes in the United States, someone kills themself. You'll rarely hear it reported on. They don't want more people killing themselves. When you hear reports on suicide, like that inane idea that everyone who survives a suicide attempt regrets it and wants to life, they're always being doctored to cover up reality that might make suicide look tantalizing or a preferable option to suffering in life. And even the people who notice this say nothing because It's not acceptable to point this out, or, because they're like the rest and view suicide as pure evil.

We only hear about those who persevered through the hardship and managed to pass on their genes and raise children who likewise had to persevere through hard times. But during those hard times, many, many, many, many people took their own lives.

I think people who view it as a privilege are privileged themselves. I don't think they've personally experienced back to back pain and turmoil that can push someone to have those thoughts. My first suicide attempt was at the age of 9, barely any life experience and all I knew was pain. All I knew was that life wasn't normal for me. I could also argue that in some ways it's easier for people to be suicidal right now.

NO other time in history have people had the amount of knowledge we currently have. We get on our screens. We see and hear of death, despair, poverty, genocide, corrupt governments who are supposed to protect, etc. and yet we cant do anything. Dont even get me started on the people actively going through those things right now.

People underestimate how much technology can truly fuck with your mind. People also underestimate trauma because they like to play "Let's decide which was worse!" as if trauma in GENERAL doesn't fuck people up regardless. To me it's like comparing someone who went through physical abuse to someone who experienced their parents getting a divorce. One is objectively worse, but they both can mess a person up.

completely agree and this goes so much further than you'd think. i've gone through 2 major isolated traumatic incidents, with one having a very clear severe effect on me while the other didn't. but when people hear about the former, they brush it off whereas its a fucking opera of tears and hugs when i mention the latter. these people have gone through neither. but because one is played up by media, and politics, and social conditioning, they insist this is a "worse" trauma worth grieving while the other less conventional yet far more impactful one is more of an "oh that sucks." the only person who can decide "which one was worse" is the person who has gone through BOTH, personally, and even then they can only decide that for themselves.

the ego it must take to judge two different people at face value, with different biologies, in different situations, and say one is "spoiled" for taking an exit that the other didn't. this is pro-life at its core; believing not that the person in the 'worse' condition should've also deserved the opportunity to end their suffering of their own volition, but that the other person should've continued suffering as long as this random other person did. there will never be someone who's suffered 'enough' to be free of judgment post-suicide.

I'm sorry people have invalidated your trauma due to the things you've listed, and thank you for adding to my point so beautifully. You articulated my point better than I could've LMAO. You're very right. There's no right answer to what trauma can be considered worse because at the end of the day, biology and circumstances effect how people perceive things. "There will never be someone who's suffered enough to be free of judgement post suicide" is a remarkable sentence, and I'll think about it for a long ass time because it's so true.
