Someone in my head but it's not me

I guess they used to call my dreams night terrors. I used to wake up soaking wet with sweat and terrified. I eventually got used to them and finally gained control in them. Now I get some kind of morbid enjoyment out of them. They are kind of comforting if that makes sense. They are kind of scary but I know I'm dreaming and I can alter them.

Once every few weeks, they are usually dreams about me being bullied in school (it was more than 10 years ago and im grownass adult now) funny how it still follows me. in other dreams i hurt my perpetrators and waking up afraid of myself. The barely pleasants one is dreams of closeness that i yearn for, perhaps the most painful of bunch since waking up realizing there is noone beside you and noone finds you worthy enough to be loved.

I remember dreams maybe a few times a week but they are almost allways filled with anxiety. Sometimes, there's partial relief in waking up- at least initially.

I've never been too clear on what lucid dreaming is. As I understand it though- to have some control over what we dream. I can't seem to choose the subject. Although, I do frequently become suspicious that I am in fact dreaming during a dream and I'll maybe partially alter the narative if it's becoming too dangerous.

So, for example- I dreamt about a huge scorpion running around once but then- I conjured up my God father- who killed it. It was well casted really since in real life, he once squashed a wasp with his bare hands. But- I'll frequently do that- dream of something really frightening and then figure out a way of bringing it to a happier ending.

So, flying dreams also usually reach a stage where I start falling but, I always seem to float just before I hit the ground. Not sure I mitigate things consciously as such but, there is some awareness there.

During covid, I would dream about being on trains or buses and panic that no one was wearing a mask. Then, I'd realise it must be a dream. So- maybe I'm stuck in the very early phases of it.

I read once that to develop it further- you need to practice bringing yourself in and out of sleep at certain times but- I'm tired enough as it is. I don't want to be upsetting my sleep even more.

That's only one way of potentially achieving a lucid dream (WBTB or Wake Back to Bed), which is also not for me.

WILD/DILD/MILD (wake/dream/mnemonic initiated lucid dream) seems kinda nice tho.

I wonder why the number of non-dreamers here is so high? I'm one too, my dreams slowly tapered off into almost nothing since 2018. No dreams, no lucidity (that was rare to begin with) and no vividness if I do happen to dream. Not being able to dream is also a reoccurring discussion I see in severe mental illness circles. I remember that it's also a minor plot-point in the game "Bag of Milk". This should be studied.
Nevermind, it quickly skewed back in the other direction, lol.

How often and what you dream is entirely dependent on what foods you eat and how the chemical components of the food interact with each other.

As a pothead I would never dream. After I quit I dreamed more but not a lot. Now trazodone has me dreaming again. It's mostly suicidal stuff, replaying my embarrassments, moments I wish I'd appreciated at the time. Good paths I wish I'd taken.

I only see nightmares every night. Wish I didn't had to wake up with those dreams at all.

hmmm, probably not entirely (since my dreams seem to involve stuff I've seen and heard too), tho I did hear that cheese has some effect on dreams

No, it's true. Ofc, things you've neither seen nor heard can/will be "conjured" up by your mind as chemical messengers take snippets of information that has been stored and your brain reconstructs it into something coherent. And ofc your worries, or what you've been thinking about, or even things you've noticed (but really weren't aware you noticed them) all have an effect on what is active, or had been active, in the brain and what/how those food chemicals interact with once the foods get broken down into their basic chemical structures. None of this is new "science". All of this has been known for decades. Try going to bed some night right after consuming a bunch of some really spicy Mexican food, followed by a box of chocolate covered donuts, and see what your dreams are then.

I have complete aphantasia. Which is the inabilty to visualize anything, my "minds eye" is just a black void. This applies to sleep as well, so I literally dont have the abilty to dream. I also have a less common inability called anauralia, which is the inability to have an "inner hearing." Obviously I can have thought processes, but I cant hear, for example, music internally. So no sound or visual makes it hard to dream lol (I'm not calling either of these a negative. They have their pros and cons. Just in the case of dreaming, it does make them non-existant)
