Im assuming not, I don't think suicide is selfish. My whole life ive had people say suicide is selfish, my parents , friends even counselors. I always thought it was selfish if you would force someone to live if they are miserable. What are your thoughts??

Suicide is like anything else. It can be selfish depending on the motive or how it's carried out. It's also verrrrry culture specific.

How is it selfish? You're dead.

That is almost as confusing as the argument that intentionally not having children is "selfish". Selfish to who?

If it is selfish, then that's admitting that it's a positive & favorable to the person to commit, the expectation is to make the sacrifice of not committing for the comfort of others, otherwise you're putting yourself before others & being selfish. Right? Well then that's a very revealing confession from the person calling it "selfish" that they know we would be better off for it, that opens up a can of worms I don't think those people are ready to own up to.

"That's selfish." = "What about how I feel?" oh, right, what about how you feel--that I am selfish--what a projection, people are always telling on themselves.

I think suicide is selfish and that it being selfish is not a bad thing. People want you to be alive and that's not seen as selfish, even though for the suicidal person it is difficult. From how I see life, nobody really cares and therefore you should focus on yourself and your needs.

I guess in some way it can be viewed as selfish.

If you think about it, people are calling it selfish out of their own selfish desire to have *that person* around, even if they are deeply hurting and yearning for the end.

No decision in life is simple, especially those that end all cycles. Personally, I don't worry myself with it, as when I'm gone, i'm gone. If there's an afterlife then I can feel sorry then.

On the other hand, some people think they are doing others a favour by CTB. Soo… it's really all about who you are, if it benefits you and your perspective.

Suicide is a consequence of too much suffering, so imo it's not selfish. If you suffer from depression, it's lethal disease, so it's a death like another to me. Nobody will say that dying from cancer is selfish (even if the person smoked 40 cigarettes a day). I may be wrong but that's what I think. Good question but difficult to answer because every situation is different.

No, the right to die is a human right, the selfish ones are those who take this right away for others and do all they can to prolong the futile, unnecessary suffering of this torturous existence that just leads to decay and death anyway, I see so much selfishness in imposing this existence onto others and making existence into a prison where one cannot painlessly escape when they wish to, all that anti-suicide does is cause so much harm and suffering, anti-suicide is criminal to me.

That's exactly what I'm saying, it's inhumane to keep someone alive that doesn't want to be alive. Especially if say someone survives an attempt that leaves brain damage, leaving them alive is so cruel and it's insane to me how so many places have assisted suicide illegal unless you have a disease killing you. If someone is suicidal they have a reason they want to die!! They don't just wake up and want to ctb for fun.

Of course it's not selfish. It's selfless for the person to end their own suffering. The thing that's actually selfish is having children.

Difficult question. I'm going to say typically yes it is, even as someone that would go today if there were an easy way. If there is truly no one in your life, then I guess it wouldn't be. But if a loved one would be greatly affected by it, then yes, as you're putting your needs above theirs.
If I do it, I'll know I'm doing the wrong thing in that regard. SI has held me back when I've been close. But knowing how they'd feel is probably part of that SI. It's all just awful.

If you are doing it in a way it affects someone else, as in for example cancelling an event that mattered to someone, not as in hurting their feelings, I guess it could be considered selfish compared to going silently.

But it also doesn't really matter what your motives are when you are that deep into doing it, and sometimes can be contradicting if you don't have any other options.

Selfish or not, it should be someone's own choice.

I'd say it is, yes, you're making a decision only concerned about how it affects you. BUT there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. "Selfish" has such negative connotations associated with it, and I'd rather be selfish than live with the idea that I have to be around to please others.

Why would I care if I'm being selfish? I have to put myself first at some point, right? It's funny how you're selfless your whole life to appease those around you, and as soon as you make 1 selfish decision, you're automatically deemed a selfish person.

Life has to be treated selfishly, otherwise you'll be walked all over, and I think suicide is no different.

I understand what you mean, I was very conflicted to ctb due to my mother, I know when she finds out she'll blame herself in some extreme way. Therefore I do feel a little selfish, though there really is no other way for me.

It's selfish to ask somebody to be a clown in your life while living in emotional agony. Should they juggle too?

people who say that are the actually selfish ones. i dont know how they think that forcing someone to suffer just because they dont want to go through the process of grief is totally reasonable and not selfish at all. i think suicide is only selfish if you're a parent and your child needs you to survive

First, it's selfish to force someone who is suffering in life to live.

However, I do consider my suicide selfish. I have siblings that u care about a lot, my death will probably affect them for the rest of their life.

could be, or not. but even if it was, i couldn't care less. i think everyone in this world is selfish to some extent. what makes my suicide any different than my parents choosing to bring me into this world? what about loved ones wanting to keep me alive for their own good? doesn't make sense to me that suicide happens to be singled out from all other acts of self-interest....

I tried to struggle with that mentality as well , at this point I feel I'm mostly still around because of others and how it might affect them , but I'm worried at a certain point staying alive for someone else won't be enough . I think the stigma is more so on how others have to carry on after you , but honestly after time passes how much do you think about those that have passed ? At a certain point we are just that flash in the pan memory when someone sees something they connect to us , other than that they are living their lives as they once did . I don't think it's selfish , I think it leaves a large ripple effect when it happens but the lake will calm back down in time as it always does .
