tried it in the basement just now attached to some metal floor support
the loop immediately slips too far up close to my face with all the body weight pulling down :/

I don't think it is necessary to do that.
Does it even slide and tighten easily under pressure?

A proper slipknot is supposed to tighten around your neck immediately. The sewing could be the cause.

Full works the best.
If the knot slides easily and the rope will hold your weight, you are good.
Do not drop, ease into it. A sudden drop can overload the rope and cause it to fail.
