Why do people have to be so mean?

Yeah, seeing it more lately. I also see a lot of people consider themselves kind and thoughtful, but are quick to ridicule and burn others over the smallest things. It's not a good feeling when I find myself starting to do it too, I guess because hurt people hurt people.
I sometimes think it's easier for people to be more bold and honest with each other in this website. I would say online in general but this is the first forum I've ever been a part of so I don't want to generalize.
Out of the positivity of being vulnerable and honest here and caring towards each other, I think comes the honest criticism, judgement. Out of love and desire to help, can also come the hatred and ill intentioned. It's the nature of anonymity and knowing there is no consequence I suppose.
I also think the fact that a lot are on the edge of death here, it awakens another side of people. It could trigger a more nihilistic side and exhibit deep opinions that would have never been said otherwise. Or the nihilism brings forth a hateful spree.
There are a lo0t of caring people here but there also also a fair number of mean posts condemning people for various reasons based on race, ethinicity, what country they are from, what region they are from, the politics of the country they are from(over which no individual here has any conttrol), etc. It is disappointing to see these negative threads or posts, which have seemed more common here lately.
Some people can be very cruel and I also do not understand why. I see it as best to stay away from people as others are capable of causing us to suffer a lot more.
