I recently ordered stuff off an undisclosed website! When I went to check the tracking number, they had a popup that says this:

Due to recent changes in postal service procedures, we want to inform you that frequent checking of tracking numbers can potentially trigger internal monitoring systems, placing your package at a higher risk for delays or inspection.

Excessive tracking activity to the same address can flag shipments for review.

I didn't see any other posts specifically mentioning this so I apologize if i missed it. But yeah if you're waiting on SN or something, it might have something to do with how often you're tracking it. The suggestion they had was this:

Signing up for Informed Delivery by USPS – This is the safest way to receive real-time updates on any incoming packages to your address.

Using a third-party app like AfterShip to receive passive tracking updates without repeatedly pinging the carrier's system.

I don't know if I believe this. I don't think they have even the ability to do that. Fake news. There is no evidence that the United States Postal Service (USPS) checks or inspects packages based on how often a tracking number is viewed. USPS package inspections are primarily driven by security protocols, customs regulations for international mail, or random screenings, not by tracking activity. It seems like that website has poor stealthing when it comes to packaging. I wouldn't trust that website.

Yeah, a quick google search of the OP's "alert" they received brings back no similar results. If it happened to OP, it sure seems like it has only happened to them.

Yeah this sounds like conspiracy nonsense. It's also completely counterintuitive, you would think someone desperately looking at tracking info is most likely just, someone buying a birthday present later than they should have.

Yeah this is a meme. I do agree that you should use a 3rd party service to check a tracking number though. If your order is domestic (not international mail) then legally USPS cannot search your package without a warrant from a judge. Regardless though its better to be safe than sorry. Use a 3rd party service and don't check your tracking number over Tor lol

I never got a pop-up like that when checking package status, and I check on packages all the time. USPS just plain sucks for delivery times anymore. They're slow as molasses. I'm not doubting what the OP says is true, but I don't see it making any difference.

Exactly! Or what if you just bought some fancy gadgets or some electronics and you just want to make sure they get home safely? I think OP is a bit paranoid. The USPS does inspect packages but only if they are given a reason too. Just don't be suspicious and don't be stupid and you will be fine. I've gotten stuff delivered to me before without an issue.

I check my tracking numbers from mundane websites constantly. So do millions of people.

I don't believe that. I'm a constant package tracker because I rarely order online so when I do it's generally something I'm very excited about, like nice clothes or something nice for a hobby. And I'm far from the only one. That'd be quite the waste of an already busy and overworked system to check on every package of someone excited for their new shirt.

I have a feeling the "internal monitoring systems" are just the website's security service... you may be blocked for a short while to prevent DoS of the tracking system.... but shouldn't affect customs, maybe the site wants to either scare the user into saving bandwidth for it.... or is trying to scam the user by delaying how fast they will notice the order not progressing.
