(US) Gun purchase with suicidal ideation on record

How extensive are the background checks? I unfortunately have it on some kind of record due to an episode when I was in the army. Staff at the psych hospital seemed incompetent though so I intentionally put in some incorrect information here and there to mess with their records in case I planned on finishing the job later.

The military background checks never caught my preexisting mental issues too so I'm not sure if the gun purchase ones are meticulous enough to do so.

They just check if you had an involuntary psych ward stay.
I personally got pink slipped, however when I went to the ward i signed voluntary papers, so I wasnt considered involuntary
