Help Two different types of guns options

Which gun would be more effective, a 9mm pistol (with hollow point bullets), or a shotgun (of any kind I guess)?

Sorry, not educated enough to follow this. Is a 9mm smaller than a .38? Implying you would not use it? Your second sentence seems to imply crackheads do not walk after 9mm...meaning a 9mm is powerful. This whole gun thing is unknown to me...maybe i better see if i can figure hanging out.
