How can 4 years of feeling this way be classed as a phase? Things have just been getting worse for me nothing in my life is really going anywhere... Also I've been a member of this forum for over a year, and although I had a few bearable months none of it's been great for a long time. Before the reddit got closed down I would visit there, too..

First of all, I love the Millais in your avatar. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood produced some of the greaters paintings in the history of art. Awesome choice of avatar!

Second of all, if you have been feeling unwell for 4 years, then it's serious and most definitely not a phase.

Could you elaborate on who tells you it's a phase? Or is it just something you are telling yourself, hoping for the best?

Thank you, I think it's a fantastic painting too!

I thought it was quite a long time too. I mean there are indications from quite a lot further back too, of something not being quite right with me emotionally, I think a phase would be a few weeks or months at most.

My Dad keeps telling me "this phase will pass" and some other well-meaning statements like "it will get better" and "you'll find your place" when the likelihood of any of those things happening seems highly improbable. He also says that I'm bound to feel despondent at the moment because I'm "in recovery" (from getting out of the psych ward), which is true, but I never really recovered from my first hospitalisation so I don't see this passing and can't envisage a state where I reach any kind of recovery.

It sounds like your dad means well and is trying to encourage you.

I get that it's frustrating to hear certain things (I am allergic to positivity related to my chronic illness) but parents are like that.

They try to say something nice and hope for the best because they love you.
