Repost (accidentally posted in off topic)
So the future missus (my gf) wants me to try therapy again. I've been before but it was more counseling than anything. Once a week I show up and talk about what was stressing me and how I could "get better" (go for a walk, practice mindfulness) all of that shit never worked and I'd never feel able to open up or just quit out of frustration.
How do I approach therapy, I know the specific traumatic events in my life. They give me poor sleep and at times give me what feels like ptsd. I want to just tell them what has happened before in my life vs the minor things that stress me out right now .
Is it a specific type of therapy I should seek?
Also how does getting diagnosed for mental disorders go?
Is it like a test where they test for everything or just separate ones that you have to test for multiple times?
I'm aware that telling them I have thoughts of ending myself and others will sometimes get me in trouble and to be careful with that. But what else?

You know what's causing your problems - trauma (what ever has caused it). This is exactly the point where a therapist has to work on. Afaik there is specialized trauma therapy but obviously that is also a wide and complex field with many different kind of traumas that need an individual approach.

Idk how mental disorders are diagnosed but you will have to do many tests probably - depending on which disorders are suspected.
