• Hey Guest,

We wanted to share a quick update with the community.

Our public expense ledger is now live, allowing anyone to see how donations are used to support the ongoing operation of the site.

Over the past year, increased regulatory pressure in multiple regions like UK OFCOM and Australia's eSafety has led to higher operational costs, including infrastructure, security, and the need to work with more specialized service providers to keep the site online and stable.

If you value the community and would like to help support its continued operation, donations are greatly appreciated. If you wish to donate via Bank Transfer or other options, please open a ticket.

CAUTION: My intention in sharing this information is not to glorify or persuade anyone to consider CTB. I support the right to access information related to the choice of ending one's life, as an individual sees fit. This thread aims to facilitate a frank discussion about the book and its content.

This is a thread dedicated to discussing, analyzing, and criticizing the content of the book, The Complete Manual of Suicide (完全自殺マニュアル, かんぜんじさつマニュアル, Kanzen Jisatsu Manyuaru), created and published by the Japanese author Wataru Tsurumi in 1993.

I've been periodically searching for a complete English translation for years. Now, I believe that I may (hint: "may") have finally come across a well-enough amateur translation of it. Two, to be exact:

If, for any reason, these links and their content are no longer available, I have downloaded copies of each and will share them as a ZIP file.

Here are some tunes I also stumbled across while browsing through the archive:

Feel free to bring up books, journals, articles, or other academic materials during the discussion. If there are any native Japanese users or those who are well-versed in the Japanese language, I would love to hear your perception of the book and its contents, its impact on Japanese culture, and any translation input you may want to share.

Link to an untranslated version of the book:

If you see any information that may need to be corrected, let me know.
There's also one on github, Chinese and English language version (https://github.com/CotardSyndrome/CompleteSuicideManual-En/tree/master) and I've also seen one in Spanish.
Thank you for the link, esabtbad! I would suggest to others that if you want to explore this through GitHub, sign in or create an account using a proxy email. (The site tried to have me confirm my sign-in session through my account that was created through my college email. 0_o )

I believe the song mentioned in the book's preface is "Chernobyl" (チェルノブイリ, Cherunobuiri), produced and released by the 1980s-90s Japanese punk-rock band The Blue Hearts on their 1991 album Blast Off!

The Blue Hearts - Chernobyl (チェルノブイリ)

AI Translated Lyrics (English):
Someone goes and draws a line
Amid the confusion and commotion
Someone is keeping watch over me
From beyond the distant sky

I don't wanna go to Chernobyl
I just wanna hold that girl tight
Is it the same no matter where you go?

Rain falls on the eastern town
Rain falls on the western town too
Rain falls on the northern sea
Rain falls on the southern island too

I don't wanna go to Chernobyl
I just wanna kiss that girl
On this tiny little planet

Who does this round Earth belong to?
Who do these crashing waves belong to?

Rain falls on the eastern town
Rain falls on the western town too
Rain falls on the northern sea
Rain falls on the southern island too

I don't wanna go to Chernobyl
I just wanna kiss that girl
On this tiny little planet

I don't wanna go to Chernobyl
I just wanna kiss that girl
On this tiny little planet

Who does this round Earth belong to?
Who do these crashing waves belong to?
Who does this blowing wind belong to?
Who does this beautiful morning belong to?

Chernobyl...
Chernobyl...
I don't wanna go to Chernobyl

Notes on nuance:
行きたくねぇ is a rough, colloquial way of saying "I don't want to go."
あの娘 ("that girl") carries a familiar, affectionate tone; "that girl" preserves the original feel better than "my girl."
こんなにちっぽけな惑星の上 literally means "on such a tiny planet," emphasizing Earth's smallness and fragility.
