This thread makes me feel morr at peace with the idea.
Philip Mainlander
Philipp Mainländer (October 5, 1841 – April 1, 1876) was a German poet and philosopher.

Mehtod: unknown
Very shortly after the publication of the first volume of his main work, he ended his life by hanging himself.
Adolf Hitler. Dare to argue you regret his act as unjustified
He wasn't inspirational.

Very thought provoking thread. No one mentioned that professor guy that did the massive essay on why no state of consciousness should be preferred to the other and blew his brains out at the college.

I can't believe Alan Turing...
Average human intelligence: "this guy likes the willy so I know what to do to turn him 'give him a massive dose of female hormones'! '"
I hate this species, sick fuckin creatures no fuckin idea what messed up hormones does to a persons brain, testosterone deficiency causes depersonalization,/realisation, psychosis. It's very life threatening and only just getting true recognition finally, and why's that... Only because vain men are takin it in excess to look better ten get depressed when they try coming off having lowered their natural production.
The human race is evil and deserves to perish.

Suicide Note

Mitchell Heisman, the man who shot himself September 18, 2010 in Harvard Yard, killed himself as "Experimental Elimination of Self-Preservation," according to an extensive suicide note he has published online. The note, found at the domain http://www.suicidenote.info/ , is over 1,905 pages long, and divided into complicated subsections. In its totality, the document sketches Heisman's dense, heavily-cited social, political, and ethical philosophy, and promotes his book, heretofore unpublished. Heisman worked in several bookstores throughout the area, and consulted with Harvard professors in the process of writing the document.

Most arresting of all: the note — tome, really — is probing, deeply researched, and often humorous. Heisman personality and erudition shine through every page, as he traces the philosophical steps that have led him to suicide: not really desperation or depression, but rather, intellectual curiosity, and a desire to test the limits of the unknown. After a quick read, comparisons to Albert Camus' "The Myth of Sisyphus" abound. All the more sad that such a deeply intelligent young man would choose to cut his scholarly output off at one, interesting book.

Am I remembering right that Anthony Bourdain, Michael Hutchence and David Carradine all died the same way? But in Carradine's case it was deemed an (autoerotic) accident, and in the other cases suicide? Does anyone know how it was determined that two meant to and one didn't?

Another creative for you:
L'Wren Scott (designer) hung herself.

And I'm pretty sure that was indeed my mom on the list. Thanks for the shout-out!

Avicii committed suicide as I read an article on "the reason the suicide confirmation and method are very delayed is because depressed people who are of similar age look at the person and think what is there for them or it inspires then to act" and this messed with My existential angst, it got me as I was Avicii's age and was having that exact thought when I read the article leading me to believe I'm being fucked with by a power as the cutting method might be how I go.

The trouble with such works is few of us have the enthusiasm to read such a long piece.
If only there could be an ultimate quote that summed up everything and cured all our anxieties. To me 2000 pages was giving a meaning to life, if it takes that much to explain it has none. He was a good person I think good intentions. I've came to the conclusion nothing can comfort us and we have to find our own contentness.

From what I recall, Hemingway had bipolar disorder. Towards the end of his life he was having creative difficulties. I remember reading of an artist who had bd and after undergoing treatment to alleviate it, she declined to continue bc the manic state is when she was able to be paint great pieces. I think the depressive state is what they're in more frequently. Hemingway had a rough life and when his gift of writing was taken from him then he attempted to shoot himself but was arrested. He was on his way to the ward when he claimed he needed smth from his home that he ran and shot himself.

I agree. Don´t know if they are on that level but for me as a music lover I will always think of Chris Cornell and Michael Hutchence which both hang themselves.

Going with musicians, some other notable ones in my opinion that weren't mentioned here previously are:

Layne Staley (singer/frontman of Alice in Chains and Mad Season) died from an overdose on April 5th 2002 (same day as Kurt Cobain but 8 years apart).

Scott Weiland (singer/frontman of Stone Temple Pilots) died from an overdose on December 3rd 2015.

Taylor Hawkins (drummer/backing vocalist of Foo Fighters) died of an overdose on March 25th 2022.

What all of them had in common were struggles of depression/stress/exhaustion.

Philip Gale, a gifted young software developer

"For weeks, Gale had been asking classmates how to get access to the roof of MIT's tallest structure, the Cecil and Ida Green Building, which is occupied by the Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Department.[7] On March 13, 1998, at about 7:30 pm in an empty classroom on the 15th floor of the Green Building, Gale brought his portable digital recorder, which he switched on.[1] Gale then wrote and drew the following on the blackboard: Isaac Newton's equation for how an object accelerates as it falls, along with a sketch of a stick figure tossing a chair. He signed it, "Phil was here", picked up a chair and hurled it through the heavy plate glass window. Witnesses said that he cleared the glass shards away, and then jumped out the window.[5][8][10]

Eric Plosky, a student at MIT, was inside an adjacent dorm watching television at the time of Gale's death, and heard a crashing sound.[11] Plosky recounted to National Public Radio, "The windows of the building were sealed. So he actually had to throw a chair out the window to break it so that he could jump through. The noise that we heard was that chair hitting the ground. Some of the people in my dorm actually looked out the window in time to see him fall."[11]

"It was typical Phil. It's so like him to have planned a show", said his former girlfriend Christine Hrul, "He was so careful with things in his life, so methodical".[7] Students reported hearing the sound of breaking glass, then a splintering sound, and last a scream.[12] Gale was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:05 pm.[10]

Police released part of Gale's suicide note, which was found at his apartment:

Presumably I have jumped from a tall building. Yes, it is odd. To tell you why would be to tell you my mind! I cannot do this. I am not crazy, albeit driven to suicide. "It is not about any single event, or person. It is about stubborn sadness, and a detached view of the world. I see my life — so much dreary, mundane, wasted time wishing upon unattainable goals — and I feel little attachment to the future. But it is not so bad, relatively. I exaggerate. "In the end, it is that I am unwilling (sick of living) to live in mediocrity. And this is what I have chosen to do about it. "The saddest part is the inevitable guilt and sorrow I will force on my family and friends. But there is not much I can say. I am sorry. Try to understand that this is about me and my 'fuked up ideas.' It is not because I was raised poorly or not cared for enough. It just is. "Please give my $ to my family and my gizmos to people who will use them. — and no fuking suing! "I am scared of the fall. I am scared of the impact. But when it is through, it will be through. "take care world, Philip"

Gale closed his handwritten suicide note with a smiley face and the words "And stay happy!"[1]

After an investigation and an autopsy by Cambridge police, Gale's death at the age of nineteen,[11] late on the evening of March 13, 1998, was ruled a suicide.[2]"

This is kind of comforting to read.

And yes, it's debatable whether Van Gogh shot himself. Youtuber Wendigoon has a good video on the subject.

Hannibal Barca, the famous Carthaginian general of the Second Punic War, died by suicide in 183 BC to avoid being captured by Rome.

Context Leading to His Death

After his defeat in the Second Punic War, Hannibal became a statesman in Carthage but was later forced into exile because Rome demanded his surrender. He spent years moving between eastern Mediterranean kingdoms—first with Antiochus III of the Seleucid Empire, and later in Bithynia—helping them resist Roman influence.

Rome, still determined to capture him, pressured the king of Bithynia to hand him over.

How He Died

According to ancient sources (Livy, Polybius, Plutarch):
  • Hannibal took poison that he had long kept with him for such an occasion.
  • Accounts differ slightly, but most say he drank the poison in a small house near Libyssa (in modern-day Turkey).
  • His reported last words expressed defiance—something like:
"Let us relieve the Romans of their long anxiety, since they think it too slow and tedious a task to wait for the death of an old man."
