I was browsing some Chemistry videos a few days ago and stumbled across one about preparation and uses of SN. One preparation method was reducing Sodium Nitrate into Nitrite by heating the Nitrate (7.1 gm used in video) until it becomes molten, then adding a smouldering piece of charcoal (0.5gm) into the molten Nitrate. It claims that the carbon reacts with the Nitrate to form Sodium Nitrite and CO2.

I haven't tested this, as I don't have my SN yet, but maybe someone with a better science background could try it out and give some results?

Sounds interesting, yet not easy to do.
