Sleeping pills alcohol and suffocation?

I'm reading a young adult book where someone commits suicide. He took a large amount of sleeping pills and placed a plastic bag over his head which he made sure stayed in place with an elastic band so he basically suffocated while he was unconscious.

Is this possible?

Possible yes but also high chance of failing and if you're not unconscious enough, most likely painful, breathing CO2 again and again.
