I quite like proverbs really. Some I've found to be true are:

'Too many cooks spoil the broth.'

'Actions speak louder than words.'

'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.'

'Don't count your chickens before they are hatched.'

'History repeats itself.'

'Better late than never.'

'Don't bite the hand that feeds.'

'No pain, no gain.' (Unfortunately.)

Some I tend to believe in, although I doubt they are entirely true:

'A leopard can't change its spots.'

'Rome wasn't built in a day.'

'Blood is thicker than water.'

'It's better to be safe than sorry.' My life has been pretty dull as a result...

Some I'm just not sure about:

'You can't judge a book by its cover.'

I like the sentiment. To not judge by appearances only. I think it ignores instinct though. I always thought Jimmy Saville looked dodgy- even before it was revealed he was. Sometimes, I think our initial impressions are right.

'You reap what you sow.'

Sometimes true. It would be nice if karma definitely existed but it doesn't always.

'Strike while the iron is hot.'

Not always best. Sonetimes it's better to be cautious and think/ plan for a minute.

'The truth will always prevail.'

I wish that was true but, I doubt it.

'Curiosity killed the cat.'

I think it's good to be somewhat curious.

Some I've found to be false:

'A bad workman blames his tools.'

Some tools are very poor quality. Although, maybe the workman was 'bad' for buying the crap tool in the first place.

'Practice makes perfect.'

You might improve- certainly but, maybe we aren't built to succeed in some things. You can also become practised at doing something the wrong way! Say lifting weights with poor posture. Which is far from perfect if it results in injury.

'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.'

Depends how you feel about your work really. While I enjoyed it, my life didn't feel dull.

How about you? Any favourite sayings/ proverbs? Any you don't like or, find to be false?

'Curiosity killed the cat.'

I think it's good to be somewhat curious.
I will say about that the sentence that comes after this is often forgotten about. The full version is "Curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back" which I would say holds more truth than just the first bit of it tho still not always true.

I've never heard the second part. Interesting. Satisfaction from what though? Not finding out whatever they were curious about? Or, finding out but, losing a life for it? I wonder if it felt worth it.

I think its supposed to mean that while their curiosity caused a negative effect to them, their satisfaction from knowing about this new thing made it worth it.

I found this one to be interesting....

When bad luck is bound to you even a ripe banana can remove your tooth...

The fact that you have two legs doesn't mean you can climb two trees simultaneously...

Tame your desires before they tame you....

He that chases two hares catches none....

I'll add more later...

Contradictory proverbs are my favorite. "Too many cooks spoil the broth." Well okay then, but "many hands make light work." Which is it?

The one I find most true is "if you lie with dogs, you'll rise with fleas." Just this past week I had to nuke my place. And my dog. And myself.

It's the first one- in my experience- too many cooks etc. But then- it depends on the type of people involved. It ties in to another one: 'Too many chiefs, not enough indians.' So- if you have a bunch of people humble enough to take instruction and, trusting enough in their leader, then: 'Many hands make light work.' If you have a bunch of 'experts' who all think they know best, the whole thing will take forever and be a total headache.

Oh no! I hope you are all flea free now.

'No pain, no gain.' (Unfortunately.)
This one is quite false, if this would be true, many people would've been virtually unstoppable by the amount of pain they suffered in their lives.

Good point. I suppose it refers more to 'recovery' though/ overcoming fears/ bettering our health etc. In that case- I think that is also painful- unfortunately.

But, also unfortunately true. People can go through that particular pain too and receive little gain for it- seemingly.

'Actions speak louder than words.'

I don't believe in words anymore. Observe someones actions, especially when they think they are not being watched. It tells you everything you need to know.

It's likely more of a modern rendition of the phrase (since the claim that it was the original no one can seem to support) but I prefer the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.

I despise with all my being the "apple doesn't fall far from the tree." I wish my parents a very unpleasant life, and I am not, nor am I going to be, a bit like them; any resemblance stops at physical traits, as I would never abandon nor neglect my loved ones, let alone a child if I had one. To define my entire (attempted) relationship with my mother, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink".
