I just stumbled upon a quote with a rather confusing end: "Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternative." -Maurice Chevalier

What "alternative" is the quote implying to? Growing young? Staying the same age? Death?

Overall, it sounds like a pro-lifer's ridiculous attempt at rationalizing and trivializing old age while trying to sound witty and wise. Personally, I would welcome a painlessly death over old age in a heartbeat.

Just by curiosity, what do you think is the "alternative" to growing old in reference to this quote?

Seems like a dramatic way of saying "at least youre not dead." If I get to a "ripe", old age, and someone told me that, I would be very upset.

Yeah death, which is odd since the majority think they're going somewhere when they die.
