this will probably be my last inquiry before I ctb with scuba. Do you any of you know how to test nitrogen purity in simple terms? I read some use a gas flow restrictor but is that the same as a regulator? I bought an oxygen detector that was recommended just waiting on it to deliver and have a 40 cuft cylinder though am a tad afraid of using too much for testing.

What are you trying to test? If you want a simple test you can light a candle in a container and gently put N2 into the container.
If you bought from a reputable supplier you shouldnt need to test anything

Sometimes they can lie about the purity of nitrogen. Sometimes they can say it's "99.999% pure N2" and then it's actually less pure than that, though not always the case it depends where it was purchased.

I think it's better to measure the concentration of oxygen instead of nitrogen. Oxygen analyzers are available on amazon.

This doesn't make sense to me, at least.
am I missing something?

Yeah it's becuase it doesn't make sense. Nitrogen is explosive when coming into contact with fire and it seems odd this person would suggest that but who knows maybe their heart was in the right place and they were misinformed. Do I recommend that method to test? No. I'm simply wanting to find a way to get better testing results without using a surplus of nitrogen gas using the oxygen meter that was purchased on Amazon. Will try looking more in the forum and peaceful pill website.

As long as you bought nitrogen that's pure & it's not a blend (food grade is fine) it does not need to be tested. However!… an exit bag is what's recommended by the pph, not scuba.

What happens if it wasn't food grade and it's still 99.999% pure n2?

N2 is 'inert', it's not flammable.
Also, the other person's 'candle testing method" can't achieve anything meaningful from my thinking. Always willing to be wrong though .

I was going to say this as well. However, I think a candle could be a useful indicator if a oxygen analyzer isn't available. You could use direct nitrogen air flow at a candle, and it would probably look at least slightly different whether the nitrogen is pure or not. A more complex method is putting a candle in place of your head in an exit bag setup and seeing if the candle gets extinguished (although I don't know the relative oxygen levels required to sustain a candle vs human survival). The candle will go out as it uses oxygen to burn. If nitrogen is from a professional supplier there is 0 reason to test it beyond what is on the coa as they have already fully tested it themselves

Candle in an enclosed container would go out by itself eventually as it uses up all the O2,just as it would pumping N2 into it(timeframes of these 2 are a little different I would assume).
This is not a testing method you would perform if your life depended on the outcome right? .
I agree you don't really need to test N2 from developed countries but 'trust but verify' is a thing.
Regards
