I have a right-wing acquaintance. I ghosted him for a year. And He is so much into the MAGA cult now. And He simply is not used to when someone disagrees with him. I pointed out some fallacies in his thinking/World view and He could not respond to it. Which is funny because He worships intelligence so much.

I think I am also susceptible to many biases. Especially with my illness. Black white thinking and as a consequence a lot of catastrophizing.

I think confirmation bias, wishful thinking and cognitive dissonance played a role in that I was so fucking certain Kamala would win. I also trusted "science" personified by Allan Lichtman too much. I should have digged deeper into his Model. It could also be a hindsight bias now lol (doubt it) . Or the bandwagon effect. Or an overconfidence bias. Probably a mixture of All of them. Maybe after posting all my threads about it could also have been a product of the sunk cost fallacy. Or the Dunning Krueger effect even though I think there is not much empirical evidence for this bias. For the others Idk tbh. I think the coverage of pundits is way too much influenced by the recency effect and groupthink.

I think because of my illness (psychosis) I tend to see patterns in random events/data. (clustering Illusion). I also think I am Pretty low at ambiguity tolerance on certain Issues.

Which biases have you noticed in your thinking?

I don't know how much of them are cognition biases but, it's interesting to think about how our brains work, their 'defaults' and prejudices etc. You do come up with such interesting threads.

Mostly a deep pessimism/ cynicism for me. I guess that's a bias. Definitely prone to catastophizing also. I'm probably too lazy and distrustful to follow any specific school of thought that closely though.

But yeah, a deep distrust, cynicism and paranoia towards our leaders and the corporations that own them. A bias against the rich and powerful I suppose which, I'm sure isn't entirely fair or true. They can't all be corrupt? Can they? 😬

I think I'm fairly irresponsible. So- if the news gets too horrible, I just want to bury my head in the sand. So- quite an immature cognititive reflex to leave it to someone else to think about.

The truth being that I don't want to be a part of this world. I don't want the worry of thinking about it or being responsible for any tiny speck of it. Alongside the resentment that I am for now.

The distrust and paranoia comes in there too though. Why should I listen to politicians lying? How can I confidently vote if they're lying about what they will do?

So, a sort of nihilism creeping in I suppose. Not so much that nothing matters but that we don't have the truth to make reasonably judged decisions, so ultimately- what power do we have? It's like playing chess but the board keeps being flipped around! Plus, my paranoia reckons there's corruption all over the place at the highest level, down.

My brain really does just want to be left alone to drift off into doing something creative though. I enjoy coming here and letting it think about stuff but the real world just sickens it. I suppose I'm a fantasist rather than a realist. Reality looks doomed to me!

I suffer from confirmation bias in the very worst way. Anything about corrupt corporations and CEO's destroying the world and killing people mercilessly- I'm all over. It all confirms that I was right.

I'm not so bad at seeing things from various points of view though. I'm open to changing my mind and challeging prejudices or unmerited paranoia I might have.

Unfortunately, resentment is taking up way too much of my brain power now but, I don't know how to stop it really. Other than to realise it isn't useful maybe.

My brain generally just flip flops between all the negativety and resentment and then then with whatever I try to distract it with pretty much.

Have you watched Westworld (HBO series)? The 'hosts' (the robot people) can be controlled via these tablet-like touch screens. It's cool though- you see their thoughts being mapped out in columns. I wonder what our brains would look like mapped out like that. How many triggers to stimuli lead to suicidal thoughts for instance. I reckon my morning would look like this:

《Alarm Sound》Wake up!
《Confusion》Recognition of life signs(ish).
《Recognition》Oh shit, it's me and I'm still alive.
《Memory recall》Oh f*ck and there's so much to worry about.
《Biology coming online》I'm thirsty and, I need the loo.
《Logic》My first suicidal thought of the day.

Most of my biases are confirmation biases, but I do a bit of Ad Eminem sometimes.

EDIT: OK, that was autocorrect, it was Hominem, but Eminem is too funny to erase.

I could've ghost wrote this sentence lol. I was in exactly the same boat. The wishful thinking was so strong during election season. The next morning didn't even feel real.

As for me... I also for sure fall into the typical mind fallacy more often than I would like. I didn't really think about it until this post, but I suppose putting any amount of stock into something like horoscopes - even if only a little - probably counts towards some kind of cognitive bias, huh? When it comes to things in my every day life, like friendships or art projects or whatever, I'm also very aware of the sunk cost fallacy, though that does little to get me to STOP whatever I'm doing...

My bias can be summed up in this context like this: Politics is BS and so is psychology.
