I mean the title basically says it all. A new semester in uni has just started, literally day 1 of classes, and I get a call that one of my childhood cats has to be put down (why can't it of been me instead lol). I had just flown back to uni too, almost as if it waited for me to be gone to go.

Would say it put a generally sour taste on what was kinda not quite a terrible first set of classes. Does make me question why it's so normalized to euthanize a pet to "put it out of its misery" but when I say something like that I get a free trip to the hospital for a psyche eval.

I knew it was going to happen honestly, he was starting to get sick a few months prior but had seemingly started to recover. He had lost weight but was still generally healthy in that way. It wasn't really "sudden sudden" but still a shock. I also thought he was 12 but no apparently he was actually 17, still a bit young for a cat to die.

I think they made the right choice, he was very clearly in a lot of pain and wasn't going to make it through the night, hell he almost died just in the vet waiting room apparently.

Poor sweet boy.
17 is a pretty standard age for a cat; some can live longer but it seems like that's more like a human living past 80. Even under ideal conditions, it is less often the norm.
May he rest in peace.

A lot of my cats in the past have lived to 18, 19, even up to 23.

I'm honestly more worried for my sister. I haven't seen my cats that much in the past few years as I live farther away for uni, but she has a really close attachment to all of them and most of the other cats are all about the same age. If they all go around the same time…

I, myself, don't really know how to properly express or feel strong emotions anymore, but I know that it would make her upset and, even tho I am trying to get my family to forget I exist, I would hate to see her devastated like that.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's never easy to lose a beloved pet, still remember when my pet turtle passed away last year, I was devastated. It really sounds like you were close to your cat and had built a special bond with him over the years. It's completely natural to be feeling the way you are now. Remember to give yourself time and space to grieve his loss. Sending you love 🫶🫂

I am so sorry ;-; I know how much it hurts. They are such good friends to us. You were both fortunate to have each other  and the bond can never be broken.
