//just writing my thoughts out about a movie i thought could be interesting if you like talking about the topic of suicide.

Watched a movie yesterday called "in the wild" i think, where this dude basically got so revolted with society he became a tramp and lived in the wild, abandoned his family with no warning and just went for it. eating birds in the middle of the mountain and shit. typical thing white men will look at and go "hell yeah brother" you know?

anyway, what i thought was interesting was that, i could kind of relate to his revolt regarding society. but instead of going "i hate society so i will live in the middle of the woods with no human interaction and no sight to it", i thought i couldn't do anything about it so i'd rather die. In the end he did die, but it did not seem as though he wanted to. (i guess dying of cold and hunger is just not a pain-free method)

It never ocurred to me that there was an option to just.. live in ignorance of society instead of killing myself. The result is the same; of escaping this world.

Personally i don't think i'd be all that comfortable knowing i chose ignorance, and in general i would just never submit myself to this kind of thing, but maybe if you're fighting for your live everyday in the wild you might even forget about it.

Suicide wasn't mentioned as a topic in the movie, but i just felt it could be an interesting relation. What people said about him was also similar to how people bash a person who kills themselves -- selfish, irresponsible.

The difference is that, i guess what he did is not as easily understood as a suicide. (even though suicides are not easily understood at all). There was nothing 'wrong' with his life after all -- He was a rich guy who had a really great life and no major trauma. When you life a very good life, i guess it's harder to think about suicide straight up. when you life a good life you are able to apreciate more things about life, so he still wanted to try for this world.

there's also a philosophical side to the story -- he was an avid reader of this philosopher that i don't really remember how to type out. Trudeau? Trudou? whatever.
i could write some more things about this side of the story but since i need to go out now i'll leave that for later.

Reminds me of this story:

This guy survived 27 years! He would steel lots of stuff though!

I always have mixed feelings really. On the one hand, I think- good for you! Refuse to comply. On the other though, obviously breaking in to property and stealing isn't great. Weird though- for some people to just suddenly do it one day.

Maybe we've all thought about it. Would life be better off grid? No taxes, fewer people around. I think it could end up being just as stressful though. Very cold I imagine. Very little safety, intermittent food and water supply. No healthcare. I doubt I'd last long!

True though, suicide is another form of escaping this world and its pressures. like, the ultimate off grid attempt.

Ah into the wild is a pending movie I need to watch.I'm pretty alone. But I don't know if I can be that alone. In the wilderness, just surviving off foraging?damn. That's something else entirely.

I have no idea how somebody can go "hell yeah brother" to something like this, but then, I'm not typical. Have fun with all the mess and disease...

Interesting interpretation of the movie, however.

Into The Wild is a major piece of media for me. both the book, the portrayal in the film, the soundtrack written specifically for it by eddie vedder.

chris mccandles parents moved within miles of where I used to live after the film came out. I was very young at the time but I always wanted to tell them how it spoke to me or just… something.

that tied in with finding out my bio Dad OD'd in Alaska…. I kinda wanna die in Alaska. under the northern lights.

I always thought that, if my life got any harder than it already is i would not hesitate to cbt. I can't imagine willingly making your living situation so difficult that you need to fight for it every single day in the wild, but at the same time i can also understand people who want a painful death or self-harm. it's definetly an odd way to think of suicide and self-harm, but still interesting

You can ignore society and refuse to interact with it, I think is a valid action, one of the most valid actually, a lot of "white men" (and from other colors too) do exactly this, not in such spectacular fashion as Chris Mcandless but still, they just... refuse.

Dante Alighieri once said that the darkest place in hell is reserved for those who remain neutral in times of moral crisis, maybe, but what is hell when you are already experiencing hell here on earth? Every aspect of human life is in crisis, social, economic, environmental, who did this?who "voted" the mechanisms? Who wrote the laws? Who rewarded the corrupt and evil with money and power? Not me, i'm willing to bet not you either, and now Dante Alighieri says we are going to hell if we don't do something, but he forgets that all of this people who just refuse society ARE doing something... They are rebelling by remaining neutral.

Sad thing is, Mcandless lived as free and authentically as he could, ignoring society as much as possible, the kind of thing that make "white men" go "hell yeah bro" because of how raw and committed such an act is, but he didn't want to die, he desperately tried to escape that bus and return, but he couldn't, because he took things too far, so be careful, just like with suicide, if you choose to rebell by refusing the world, there might be no way back.

Have you tried watching the TV show alone? I've been watching it since season 1, it's very enjoyable. Basically, a group of contestants have to live on their own in the wild and forage by themselves and build their own shelter. They're completely alone for real. Each of them has a camera to capture their own footage, which is then given to the show for editing.

Many of the episodes are set in Alaska, Saskatchewan, the Canadian Arctic, Africa.

It's very beautiful. Some of them come close to death. Some of them literally kill moose with knives,Face off with bears, etc

I've always wondered what it would be like to go into the wild and do a bit of living. For a short period of time, of course🤭

I think he ate a poisonous berry and was blocked off by a flooded river to escape.
