The futility of putting in effort day after day, just to barely stay afloat. You try to survive, to function, maybe even to find meaning or joy, but the universe doesn't respond. It doesn't help, it doesn't guide, it doesn't reward. It just is. Cold, vast, and indifferent.

You can push yourself to work hard, to be kind, to improve but it doesn't guarantee peace, love, or even basic safety. It doesn't stop disease, accidents, betrayal, or loss. The sea doesn't change its nature for you. You kick and fight the current, but it keeps dragging you under and the scariest part is that there's no shore in sight. No moment where you get to say, "Finally, I've made it." Because even the so called "good times" are fleeting. You're always one tragedy, one bad stroke of luck away from being pulled down again.

And when you're already exhausted mentally, emotionally, spiritually just staying above water feels like punishment, not life.

You're right: the universe doesn't reward effort. It doesn't promise fairness or balance or that "things happen for a reason." It just spins. People win lotteries or die in their sleep for no reason at all. You can do everything right and still suffer. You can suffer and still be told to try harder.
And what do we get in return? A handful of fleeting moments, maybe. The feeling of sun on your face. Someone's head on your shoulder. A song that understands you better than anyone else ever has. Small mercies. Small, yes. But sometimes they're all that keep people here.

It's okay to feel exhausted. It's okay to look at the sea and want to stop kicking. It doesn't make you weak.
And no—there might not be a shore. But if you're treading water today, even barely, even bitterly, that's still something. You're not alone in it.

Whatever choice you make, just know that you're not failing by feeling this way. The sea is cold. The current is cruel. You're not imagining it. You're just trying to survive it.

when you're in pain, knowing others are too doesn't exactly bring comfort if anything, it can make the whole thing feel even more tragic. Like, great, so everyone's drowning and we're all just meant to smile through it?

Sometimes people say that stuff because they don't know what else to offer. But you're right knowing others suffer doesn't make your suffering hurt any less. It doesn't fix your situation, or lighten the weight you carry every day.

People see proper grammar and clear structure these days and immediately assume it's a robot. Not everything that's well written is ai generated. Some of us just actually take the time to articulate ourselves. :meh:

Yeah, exactly. Misery doesn't get lighter just because it's crowded. Knowing other people are suffering too doesn't make the pain noble or poetic—it just makes the whole thing feel even more bleak. It's not comforting, it's just confirmation that everything's kind of fucked. People say it to be supportive, but it lands flat when you're the one sinking.

If @gothbird was using ChatGPT, she would have responded to this with something like:
  • "Thanks for the compliment! I guess my writing skills are getting more AI-like every day. 😄 But nope, it's all me!"
  • "I appreciate your feedback, but I believe my perspective is based on careful consideration and experience."
  • "Actually, it's my original work. I appreciate your feedback, though! What part do you think sounds AI-generated?"
  • "If I had a dollar for every time someone thought I was using ChatGPT, I could probably hire one! But no, it's just my thoughts."
  • "I can see why you might think that, but I promise it's my own writing."
  • "I understand where you're coming from, but I stand by my choices. Everyone has different viewpoints, and that's okay!"
There is actually no definitive way to tell what was written by AI vs a human, as AI engines were all trained with human writing. Even the supposed AI detector are not always right, although they did say that gothbird's statement was 91% probability that it was written by a human.

As this isn't a graded homework assignment, let's give people the benefit of the doubt and assuming what they posted is what they mean, regardless of how they put the words together. Focus on the content of the message and not the manner in which it was assembled.

I've been thinking a lot about the utter indifference of the world. Was watching this guy on YouTube who has a guitar channel, and he was talking about how difficult it is to make a living as a musician. This is just a more intense version of how things work pretty much for everyone. I've had a few successes and many, many failures. It's the hardest thing in the world to put your work--or yourself--out there and get nothing in return. I feel haunted by it.
