I just purchased a gun. I went in quite sad and nervous but now I actually feel calm and better. It's good to know I have it available. Not sure if I'm going to go ahead and CTB today or wait a few days, but at least I'm prepared

Yeah, where I live the background check is pretty easy. No waiting period.
I told the salesman I didn't know much about buying a gun and that I needed it for protection at home because I live in a bad neighborhood. He helped me decide on a 9 mm semiautomatic because it should be easy to use. Got hollow points
I really want to get this over with but I feel like I'm procrastinating. I went out there lunch and now I'm considering going to a hotel to get it over with

You should fire it a few times before you, its fun. I have a fun spot in the woods, remember, above the ear or in the mouth. I hope you find your peace ;)

I actually looked back to see the make and model and I was wrong- it's a 380. Smith and Wesson. The salesman was super thorough and showed me lots of guns so I couldn't even remember what I bought. It's 380 Shield EZ. I honestly was surprised how easy it was to buy. Once I got over the initial fear I just chatted to the guy and he showed me how to hold the guns and the different types, and then a pretty quick background check and that was all

If you don't mind me asking. What state do you live in? I can't believe you got the gun the same day you went. That's amazing.

Only a .380? Certainly not what I would choose.

What's the lowest caliber you'd go? I would think most of all headshots done with gun to temple or to the back of mouth into brain stem are going to kill about 95 percent of the time at a minimum. She didn't seem to know about guns and went with what the employee helped her with, probably also thinking the .380 would be easy to handle for her.

On another note, I wonder how she is. She seemed determined and checked into hotel right after buying gun. No sign yet so it could have been successful. I hope to hear from the OP soon as to maybe she changed her mind under those circumstances.

if i would use a gun it would be the .460 magnum

The higher calibers are usually the easiest choice. What would be lowest caliber choice, if say you couldn't get the higher calibers and you were determined to off yourself?

The OP got a .380 and I would suspect if she used it or uses it that it would be more than sufficient. Most headshot survivors are not the ones putting it to their temple or back of mouth to the brain stem. The close contact with gun to head almost certainly determines death upon impact, for the most part.

I don't really like "theoretical" stats. I wouldn't use less than .357. I doubt I'd even risk a handgun. I'd use a shotgun. This is the problem with people who know nothing about guns. The guy at the store didn't really know what her true intent was for the gun. He sold her a "small-ish" gun, perfectly fine for someone who just needs a little protection in order to feel safer. It's a good first gun for someone to buy who has never really shot a gun before. A .380 just isn't that powerful of a round. It's the type of round that, if you need to shoot someone who is going to cause you harm, you keep shooting them with all the rounds you have, because there's a very good chance that just shooting them once with a .380 is not going to stop them. That alone tells you all you need to know. On the other hand, if you shoot someone with a .357, or a .44, even with just one shot, it's pretty much going to end the threat right then and there.

357 magnum but with a long barrel at least 6 inches

"The close contact with gun to head almost certainly determines death upon impact, for the most part. " i agree . which guns?

even small guns are deadly from a distance. but when put in contact with head the energy is much greater and the hot gasses go into the brain creating another shockwave.

where do survivors put the gun ?

what % survival for 30.06 150 grain bullet at 2900 fps in the middle of head by ear.

I agree with your choices of caliber. However most can be successful with lower calibers considering it is a self inflicted gunshot would to the head. I would consider a .22 WMR if I had to. I would prefer a .357 as well of course. I was seeing if you had a lowest caliber that you would consider to use. Also, I think if she used a .380 she wouldn't have any issues dying. Just my thoughts and generally it seems the statistics support that. I know there anomalies and times where someone survives a SIGWH, but generally not, around 95 percent successful even with .22's often death.

Well some have shot through their jaw putting the gun below their chin. That seems to cause lots of errors in intent to kill. More survivors that way than when put into mouth or at temple. But I was also refering to all gun shots to head, sometimes they are shot from a distance and that added to lots of statistics. I find that when it is SIGWH that the chances of survival even with a lower caliber tend to be limited.

Hey everybody, I'm still here. I changed my mind, told my husband, and now I'm in the psych ward. Surprisingly they let us use our phones at supervised times.
I'm not sure what I actually want in the long run. I am really curious about how you could even use a shot gun. I guess you prop it up somehow? If anybody has suggestions on that I'd be interested!

Yeah. In the background check they ask if you have been hospitalized for a mental illness, but I lied and had no problem buying a handgun. So I think I'd have no trouble next time

I just saw your comment on one of my posts, I know we don't know each other but I'm glad you're still here, and that you told him you were struggling instead of suffering alone.
