Please correct me if I'm wrong, but since strip tests measure the concentration of NO2- and not SN itself, if I follow the guide, wouldn't the concentration of NO2- be much lower than 10mg/L since SN gets divided into Na+ and NO2- once dissolved in water..?
Any experts out there who can tell me whether this is true or not..?

Can you send me the link to this test?
From what I know of chemistry, nitrite doesn't dissociate that easily. A real chemical reaction will only happen in the stomach, which will release NOâ‚‚.

From what I know, the aquarium nitrite test strips turn redder the purer it is. To measure mine, I used that as a guide. After all, in my country, from what I've talked to others here, our SN usually has the purity indicated on the package.

I think the reaction will happen when water with SN inside makes contact with the reagent in the strip, so SN becomes Na+ + NO2- and then NO2- is measured by how much reagent changes. I'm not a chemist tho, so I could be wrong.

Yeah mine does too. But I'm thinking of testing it just in case

This thread goes into more detail on the topic, in case you haven't seen it. I've wondered that too, it does seem like the testing protocol might be innacurate since it doesn't take this info into account.

Oh thank you so much! Just asking, but was the testing protocol initially provided by ppeh?

No problem, I think this is really helpful info that should be discussed more often, so that people aren't unnecessarily worried about their SN not being pure enough.

I've heard people say the testing protocols on here (like the one in Vizzy's guide) are based on one originally found in the PPH, but I can't find it anywhere in the current linked version (January 2025). Although, that is the "Essentials" version, and it says that a video of the testing protocol is available in the full version. I also read earlier versions of the PPH myself, but it's been years now so I can't remember if they had the testing protocol in them or not.

Yeah I feel like most people have no idea about this.. GPT also says what you've said is correct
