I suspect it's more frequent than we'd suppose, however it's not commonly reported as such for reasons touched upon on a similar thread.

Extremely rare. Most people don't have suicidal ideation. Among those who do, most do not attempt. Among those who attempt, most do not succeed. That leaves a fraction of a fraction of a fraction.

It's rare in my area, atleast not something you hear of that often, but then again suicide really isn't something to talk about out loud. Depends on where you are and how much it is reported and how much of it is announced.

Considering world population, suicide constitutes only about 1% of total deaths so definitely rare but that one percent represents hundreds of thousands of tormented souls across the world each year.

I think wanting to escape from pain is a common feeling, suicidal thoughts are uncommon, but moderately rare for it to stick around for a period of time where action seems possible.

It's 2nd leading cause of death for young people in Canada.
3% of people attempt suicide.
12% had thoughts of suicide.

Definitely not uncommon.

Definitely not uncommon.

Even though suicide is the second leading cause for young people, dying young is a relatively uncommon thing to begin with. So I would say that dying from suicide is not common.

Suicide is rare because a lot of people enjoy this existence and the ones who don't are deterred from killing themselves by only having access to risky methods which could lead to permanent and extreme damage if they were to fail

I also think there's a fine line with categorizing something as a suicide, too. Some OD deaths are suicides.

Binge drinking/drug use for years can cause organ failure. People know this. I knew someone who knew they would die before 70 years old because they smoke and drank so much. Technically not a suicide....but kind of, sort of.

Suicide and depression are still a big taboo in our society, though they are more common as most people think
