I was listening to Dr Thomas Joiner give a presentation about suicide. He said that while there are a lot of people who are desperate to die, very few will be able to go through with it. Do you think he's correct? In 2023 50,000 people did in the US and 700,000 did worldwide. These re not insignificant numbers.

It's an infinitesimal number compared to the ~8billion humans on Earth. Only 0.00875%.

His interpersonal theory of suicide states that acquired capability must be present and that desire for death, alone, is not sufficient. Related traits include impulsivity, fearlessness and high pain tolerance. The capacity can be developed through life experiences. For example, many with eating disorders have a high pain tolerance, as do many others who have been exposed to situations that are physically painful and their tolerance increased over time.

It may at least partially explain the use of substances like alcohol in so many attempts and completed ctb's. Liquid courage.

what are the statistics on people stuck in passive ideation for years, unable to go through with it for whatever reason?
I don't know if there are any such statistics. How would you even begin to compile a data set like that? It's a fascinating question though.

I have a feeling lot of people out there (read: tens or hundreds of millions) think about it, but most of them have some sort of buffer that protects them against being put in situations where they'd be forced to go through with the actual act.

I have read that around 90% of all suicide attempts fail and for every successful suicide there are around twenty five attempts that fail. And this is just actively suicidal people.

The overwhelming majority of people that fail are the ones that OD. People that use firearms and hanging have a very high success rate.

In my case I'm only trapped in this torturous, futile existence as I'm so cruelly denied the option to cease existing painlessly with no more suffering, the reality is that we exist in this dreadful, terrible anti-suicide world where suicide is seen as a crime with the suffering and torture seen as to force and prolong no matter what and I always suffer from how I cannot just cease existing peacefully to escape from the abomination of existence, no matter what I'd just always prefer to not exist than be burdened with this dreadful torturous existence where there is no limit as to how much one can be tortured just to decay and die anyway.

In the USA it's easy with guns. But without guns or access to heroin, it's very hard, and the only real way is hanging which is an AWFUL way to go because you have to force yourself through unbearable suffering to end life by hanging yourself with no way of getting out of the noose. I can attest after 20+ years and 20+ attempts, dying is fking hard. Statistically only 1 in 20 attempts are successful but permanent injuries from attempts are more common. Fk society fkn the cunts that make it so hard to die

I have a gun and trust me when I say it's not easy.
I have a gun and trust me when I say it's not easy. Pulling that trigger is the hardest leap imaginable to take.

I think these shockingly low figures suggest that not only is it impossible for some, it's impossible for most. There has to be hundreds of millions worldwide that want to, but can't. And we'll all be forced to endure, suffer and accept not being in control of how or when we go.
