I would say our societal view on suicide is not very mature. On one hand I would say most people understand, that some people have situations where they would be better off dead, but they still try to ignore it.
I hate how impossible is it to talk about it with anyone. You can barely talk about this topic with your psychologist. It is so censored in media. You can't talk about suicidality with chatbots, because they will immediately list you 20 hotlines and tell you to hang in there.
I wish I could watch some youtube videos about these dark topics. Sometimes I just get a need to think about suicide, but there aren't many places (except for this website) to do so.
I remember one time Dr. K said that most suicidal men he worked with didn't have history of mental illnesses and simply didn't have life worth living. He got lot of backlash for that statement, because it's supposedly pro-suicide. When he was just saying truth and trying to raise awareness.
I'm pretty sure that the biggest reason we can't have euthanasia is that it would make non suicidal people uncomfortable. It's so stupid that they have a privilege of having life, that they actually want to live, but they also have to snoop nose into other's autonomy to end their own.
I'm not saying this to hate on people (although I do a bit), I understand why it makes them uncomfortable. I would probably also be sort of anti-suicide like 5 years ago. But it just feels very alienating and isolating to be suicidal in this world.
