In the spirit of the philosophy of this forum, I think it's important not to trivialize others' reasons for ctb. We have no idea the extent to which someone's life has been affected by their situation. The moment we start playing arbiter of what's a valid reason and what's not, then we become just another (albeit) weaker form of those who work against us. If we think that we, as an external examiner, can assess "validity" of ctb will, then we acknowledge there's a line, and that someone else other than the individual should be in charge of determining that line. It's a dangerous slope. The bottom line is that people should have autonomy over their own lives.
I think we can reframe such situations as "That's not a reason I would want to ctb, but I'm sorry it has caused you so much pain. Have you considered…"
