I find it difficult because I don't exactly hate CGI. I love games too. I do hate how many jobs they've wiped out in the creative industries though. People are sometimes like- well- learn how to create on a computer but- some of us are practical people. We like to make stuff not press buttons...

I'm unsure where I stand on AI. on the one hand, it's an excellent tool for artists to find inspiration and, despite its many flaws in its current iterations, it has a lot of potential for good. I've also never understood the "AI art is theft" argument - how do you think humans learn to draw or paint? we learn by observing the works of others, and AI is no different. you can ask a sufficiently skilled human artist to "draw a dog in the style of picasso", and they will do that: AI can do something resembling the same. I don't see how that's any different, morally speaking.

I do worry for artists though; capitalism, as always, finds ways to maximise profit, and in this instance it is once again at the expense of human happiness... thankfully, it hasn't quite made it in the music world yet, so I'm safe, but yeah. it's kinda the same thing with all industrial advancements - the luddites hated the idea of industrial machines, not because they were inherently bad, but because of what it meant for their standards of living; rather than being able to pour their heart and soul into some nice woven fabric in their little hut, they had to be crammed into a smog-filled city to stoke fires and trap their fingers in automated machinery... again, same idea with industrial assembly robots - in an ideal world, the workers would get paid a living wage to do less work as the robots take up the majority of the production process. instead, the robots take up the majority of the production process, so people either get laid off or stay but make the same pittance as before working the same shitty hours. the reason? profit, as always.

tl;dr - I don't hate AI or think it's theft, but I hate what it will inevitably be used for (profit) at the expense of real people

also a brief aside: copyright law sucks. as a musician, it is terrifying to see these lawsuits with people like taylor swift etc. being sued for using the same chord progression and synth sound as something else when it's like the most basic shit that has been used in at least seven-hundred-and-eighty-four (and a half) other songs... hell, the entire genre of jazz is literally built off of other musicians copying eachother and adding their own twist. twelve-bar-blues anyone? copyright law exists solely to benefit record companies who can further exploit the work of the musicians whose music they own. edit: adam neely has some great videos on this topic which portray these ideas much more eloquently than I have here...

I hate it. Takes all the fun out of everything. Yes, I am a Luddite, idc. I've always loved tech but I don't see how this makes humans any happier. I also don't think it can be regulated fairly as far as copyrights etc. How can you prove to what extent something is AI generated or what training data might have been used? It's going to be a circus.

but also because I have a feeling that it will make people very dependent on technology for some "basic" skills as well

I guess the better phrase would be learned skills

(not that there's anything wrong with that but there comes a point where you have to do things on your own and learn from things/sources like that)

essays, resumes, how to do basic proofreading, how to cite texts/do research/find reliable sources, etc.

I always thought people would take reference from both the creative uses and practical uses but instead I feel as though they just plagerise everything

(also the use of AI is a bit worrying to me because there is already a decline in comprehension and reading for late gen z and the beginning of gen alpha)

but I do enjoy seeing people have fun with AI and just experimenting and messing around with it (music, recipes, etc.)

I don't dream about being an artist and i can give up on something without much regret, for example i gave up on programming and i don't think i deserve being a "programmer" just because i had desire and force my way in with AI, if i try something many times and try to comprehend it as much as possible and there's no results it means i'm clearly not made for it, but i think people follow rule "i want it so i deserve it" and use autotune if they can't sing, use AI to write stuff for them and cheat in other ways

I think it can have its uses, but I despise its application in art. I hope for some kind of day of reckoning like was presented in Dune (though hopefully with no bloodshed). We need to draw a line in the sand on where and when it can be used.

I am torn on this one. Ai essentially does what every artist does. Everyone is drawing inspiration from somewhere everything is a copy of a copy. Everything was already invented and tried out.
I welcome Ai as replacement of bad art (puking on canvas, taping banana to a wall) or the souless corporate memphis/Alegria art style. That one in particular really deserves to be replaced.
Same goes for bad/generic movie screen writing. I believe that if it's so bad (Amazon's rings of power) it deserves to be replaced by artificial intelligence.
On the other hand this sucks for artists and creators who are really trying and working hard. As Ai will continue to improve they won't be able to keep up.

I see this a lot. How could AI replace artists? It can only work from already existing images. It can't put anything new to it, any feeling in it. If AI can replace someone's art they were shitty artists. And if AI really can or ever will be able to replace them, then we don't need artists anymore. tbh i feel ai is one of the main reasons why i want to ctb. not even just because it's bad for creativity — though i do think that also, but it's a harder topic to discuss — but just because the effects it has on politics, scams, blackmail etc are horrifying. i think the scariest example is imagine you have someone using ai as a means to create porn of you and blackmail you threatening to send it to relatives and friends… aaaaand its already happening afaik, and it's only going to get more convincing (and easier / more streamlined) from here.

idk ai feels almost violating in a way because it can be used for such purposes, and because of it i've gone back and done my best to delete any trace of my face from the internet. fuck that yknow? but also i possibly have some trauma responses relating to violating consent and people abusing power over others so maybe i'm worrying too much.

I don't mind the use of AI in things like research, but that's it. A lot of lazy techbros and scammers are now using it to make shitty art, animations, and videos to profit off of, creeps are using it to make CSEM and porn of people who in no way consented to it, there are growing fears about the film industry laying off animators, script-writers, and artists and using AI instead, it is spreading misinformation because it keeps on getting its sources from a variety of different parts of internet, etc. AI is already starting to ruin the internet! I'm aware of the fact that the issue goes beyond AI alone and that capitalism plays a large role in many of its issues. The issues with AI may have not have been so bad if it wasn't being used by many for purely profit-driven purposes, didn't have a bunch of large companies behind it lobbying against any regulations for it, actually took into consideration people's consent for their work to be used for its training, if it weren't for many industries within the arts, such as the film industry, prioritizing profit over artistic integrity, etc.

AI has great uses, and can make life easier. You all probably hear someone using it wrong, got tribal attitudes, and say the same things about AI without bringing anyone to the table.

Real artist don't make porn of real people, right? Nor many do low quality art, mainstream art, or get references from someone else.

AI can have fantastic uses. Not only it can make life easier for artists, but there's a huge culture around artistry that will make traditional art never disappear. Not everyone can hire an artist, and it could help small teams with low budget to help them. I guess they don't matter, as they aren't part of our tribe, but I'll talk this later. I know very small companies who use them for webpages, etc, people who otherwise would either need to work more hours, or reduce income. AI can be genuinely helpful for everyone, but the current movement is anti-worker. There's also disabled people who can't even move their wrist, or grab a pencil, and everytime this is mentioned we get ridiculed. Because artists are so inclusive, apparently.

@Dot , you say you can't look your own handwriting, could you draw? Would look at your work, even digitally, and hands, be harder than typing?

All you seem to know are people doing low-effort art. It's like saying all traditional artists are hyper-realists, or something. There can be plenty of styles, and it isn't as simple as just putting a phrase. Doing good, own-styled art with prompts it's actually hard. There's more than meets the eye.

If you think AI is the source of all your sorrows, wake up. Back to the real world. It's very hard to live from this. In my Earth, the solution is not getting in an unstable job and expecting the whole world to change just for you! You aren't special and people has enough problems to create new ones. You know very well what you get yourself jnto when you get in artistry. Quit your idealism, please. If you don't like it, there are many careers out there, many viable jobs with way more stability, and frankly, almost any would be a good idea.

Not talking about here specifically, but I haven't had a good opinion on artist for similar reasons, but it gets even lower. The insane victimism, the hive-mind, the huge groupthink that emerges from needing to agree on everything, since anything could hurt us, it's never our fault for choosing a dangerous career we knew it always has little viability. I never met such an aggressive, irritable, and more prone to direct attacks against anyone different

I always thought AI would be cool but so far I'm quite disappointed in how it's been implemented. Most AI generated media looks like actual garbage, oh sure their lighting is fancy but the line work is terrible most of the time and unless it gets linked with the brain it will never be able to look exactly the way I picture things in my head.

But in practical uses it has its uses, though it is being misused. Taking away creativity and a lot of analysis jobs. Taking away livelihoods and creating a dead faced society of worker drones doing the shit work or being forced to struggle because their job has been replaced by a robot.
