thank you!! I'm currently in school right now but I could leave and go to a cvs or something during lunch because it's an open campus. Is there any specific brand you recommend?ive cut quite deep a fair few times on accident. what ive always done is just soaked up the blood with tissue paper/toilet tissue until it isnt profusely bleeding. then wash the area in the sink, dry off and then i just put a bandage over it. one of those compression ones, not the kind you wrap around yourself but im sure that could work too. then just cover with hoodies.
i always check my arm/leg periodically throughout the next few days and give it another clean over. never had any issues though. just keep a close eye on it. ive never faced an infection when ive gone too deep. as long as the area is kept clean and covered you should be okay
sorry for the late reply! not too sure on brands unfortunately, but i used to use these sorts of ones. the type you pull over the wound rather than the bog standard bandages you cut to length and wrap around the area. my parents always had them for if we injured our arms/legs and needed support, so we always had them in the house. should be pretty easy to find in chemist shops or the health/first aid section in other stores.
Do not use hydrogen peroxide. Also, the generic type of antibiotic ointments that you get at the pharmacy should not be used to treat any infections. If you get an infection then go to the doctor. Those ointments are generally more for small cuts and scrapes, not infections affecting deeper cuts.
No, it does not "all work". What the hell does that even mean? Treating deeper cuts isn't something as simple as "just use commonsense". Deeper cuts, especially fat cuts and deeper, are much more vulnerable to infection and require more aftercare to reduce the probability of there being any complications. In reality, SH aftercare in general requires more than just "good old fashion commonsense". Hence why it is such a big deal in many SH communities.
You are right. It is much more complicated than I realize. Thank you for going into even more details about the proper treatment. I learn from what you say. I've always found basic first aid to be inspiring, but never been very good at it because I'm not good with complicated things, and more of a simple person. My suggestion was based on my experience in my own life. I have survived doing things wrong obviously, that's what I meant by "it all works".
Yes but only with lit matches and once with a hot oven tray. If it goes to blisters it gets really weepy and I'd imagine at more risk of infection. Also too hard to judge severity at the time. I've never tried boiling water because the inability to control depth and extent of the scalding freaks me out.
What's your strategy for controlling depth with matches and preventing burning if you don't mind me asking?
The matches go out and cool quicky I've found. Otherwise I'd move them if it hurt too much. I don't think you can prevent burning - not sure what you mean. If you mean preventing myself from burning myself, I've substituted cutting mostly these days. Not the best substitute I'm sure my therapist would agree but there's more control with cutting.
Sorry I meant to write "prevent infection". Also is cutting not worse than burning? Ironically I'm burning myself as I see it as the a moderate alternative to cutting.
Preventing infection is pretty generic. Clean daily if the wound isn't dry. If it's dry, keep it dry and protect with a dressing. Ideally. Cos sometimes I'd hope for an infection. If the burn causes blistering there's more danger of infection than a clean cut with a blade, depending on how deep I suppose, and the tissues have more damage from a burn compared to a cut. .
