It would be hard to know unless you've gotten to know someone enough to learn their name and look up their obituary or proof of death online.

I think many of us are taking a good longish look at our lives in the company of folks who are also taking the long view into tomorrow, be it death or living.

As for me, I joined because I KNOW I am ending my life, it's just a matter of "perfect" timing. Others may have different reasons but I am certain that quite a few have followed through.

Same. I've been depressed most of my life and suicidal on and off since I was in my teen years, and have been hospitalized, which was awful, and have had failed attempts, so now I want to take my time to make sure what I do works!

It's difficult to tell - what I do know is that some members who I was trying to get in touch with via PM haven't been seen on the site since last month. Could be a number of reasons for that of course - but bearing in mind what this forum is about, you can be forgiven for assuming they have ctb.

There is certainly a pattern of people expressing apparent certainty about their imminent intentions.
Many then re-emerge with reasons/excuses which receive sympathetic and understanding responses.*
There is then uncertainty about those who don't reappear.
Did they go through with it, or have they just decided out of embarrassment to abandon any thoughts of returning to the forum ?
In nearly all cases we simply don't know.

Suicide accounted for 1.4% of all deaths in 2016 (World Health Organization), i'd guess when all is said and done around 14% of the members here will die by suicide (so 10x the average). One may be actively suicidal but not do it for decades.

A lot of people including myself feel "stuck" in limbo of wanting out but not being able to; I'm trying to explore the disconnect between thoughts and actions.

I feel like there's a weird counter-effect to researching suicide. I have every intention to ctb but digging into the facts somehow gives me relief. It's like if I know it's possible anytime I want I feel a little better. For the moment.

This 'killing yourself' thing is a lot harder than it looks.
It's probably because of a combination of survival instinct, fear of being saved and becoming disabled, fear of the afterlife, fear of pain and maybe a little bit of hope that one day things will change.

I do not understand this mentality that it's somehow "doing it wrong" not to have "done it". Several people have recently made comments about how many people are REALLY suicidal. It's weird. It is people trying to get the courage themselves by involving others? Is it people trying to feel superior? I'd love to hear explanations because it really frustrates me.
