I've been also thinking about this... basically to get more in control of myself and finally be able to overcome my SI. That monk that burned himself to death without uttering a word comes to mind...
I just don't know tho..Let's say that I can know for sure that if I spend 20 years in a Buddhist monastery I could master that skill. Would that much effort be justifiable? Or would I rather just live an average life and die by natural causes, while still trying to enjoy a non-monk life? It just seems to hard for me to train myself to that degree... Not to mention that I still wouldn't know for sure if such effort would actually work. I can be quite impulsive so even meditating for decades might not help me.

I'm not sure, but I think during
meditation should lead to a state of feeling
as much suffering as possible, and maintaining it
state at the right level so that the experience
coming from the senses (level of pain) did not have
impact on consciousness. Perhaps this is the feeling
deep depression.
Meditating can have the ultimate goal of self awareness. Smaller goals are concentration, focus, and a sense of calm. Meditating wouldn't help you directly, the calmness and awareness of what you want might.
