1 of our 2 main parties in Northern Ireland believes homosexuality is a sin and should be illegal. They also believe in creationism. So I know all about hateful/dumb views! I'm a Protestant and most Protestants vote for them. Not me though!
They helped pushes Brexit through as well without caring about the consequences for us. But I got my Irish passport recently and I'm so happy I did. I think I'd be embarrassed to show my U.K. one if I went abroad!
Do you think all of this will eventually be reversed if a new party gets in? I think the relationships with Europe have been ruined forever
I might also be able to get an EU passport but I think it might not be as simple as it used to be :-(
The DUP certainly did help push through Brexit. It was an opportunity for lots of dodgy people to smuggle their ambitious little plans in, under a camouflage of populism and racism.
Once the dust settles, there's going to be rage like no other in history when these people realise their "unicorn" isn't coming after all! That's why the Tories are doing their best to try and out law protests etc as the inevitable backlash that will occur when people start to realise that their Tory heroes, rode them like donkeys for their own selfish motives.
I think that the relationship with Europe can be repaired, but the UK will have to learn to cooperate and accept things it didn't have to last time around. Europe has had enough of our populist arrogance. They will let us join the single market eventually and the customs union, but they are going to have some very firm conditions. We will have to accept joining the Euro for example.
I think the only real possibility is that Labour can form an alliance with other parties to form a government. Then maybe we can start to crawl towards repairing some of the damage. What was destroyed in an instant can't be so rapidly put back together.
The only way people are going to truly understand the significance of leaving the EU is when it really starts to bite, hard.
