This is the only thing I feel like I can reliably kill myself with.
Does anyone think that this is a bad idea? Like would I stay alive for long enough to feel the pain? Would it fail?
Would I have to pull out the knife?

Also, does anyone know any ways I can psych myself up into doing it? Because like it's hard for me to do it.

I don't think it is a good idea at all. I doubt that it has a high success rate to start with and your concerns only make me think that your rate would be even lower.

most people would never go past making a shallow cut, that is if they even manage to injure themselves at all. you are likely within the majority of people - as in, normal humans who are scared of pain, blood and death. this alone drops your chances to zero. if you are not feeling scared right now, you will feel scared when it's time to execute this plan, which is why it's not even worth attempting or seeing as feasible.

Does anyone think that this is a bad idea?
Yes. It would be excruciating. Most people struggle to overcome SI with partial suspension hanging, and I would argue that this would almost certainly be more painful. People try to CTB by cutting their arms and more often than not they fail because the pain is too intense they have to stop. As someone who has self-harmed by cutting and also tried partial suspension, I can say at least in my own experience that even somewhat shallow cuts are probably more painful than partial suspension (at least with good technique)

I don't recommend this at all. If you're going for something accessible please, go for hanging. I guarantee it would be easier, more reliable, and less painful than this.

Like would I stay alive for long enough to feel the pain?
You would feel the pain instantly, so yes. You would be alive while you cut yourself, and for at least a few seconds afterwards. This is best case scenario assuming you hit the right places, but if you have to stop part way through cutting it would take even longer.

The biggest and most "optimal" artery in your neck is the carotid, and it is theoretically possible to live with a blockage of one carotid artery as there is collateral circulation provided by the other. You wouldn't get "knocked out" due to complete cut off of oxygen from the brain unless you took two knives and cut both carotids at once or something. You would most likely have to wait to pass out due to blood loss. If you completely severed a carotid artery this would be quick, but not instant.

Would it fail?
Probably.

Would I have to pull out the knife?
Yes, the knife would act almost as a plug if left in place. The flat side of the knife would keep some pressure and reduce bleeding to some extent. In first aid (at least American Heart Association/Canada Heart and Stroke Foundation curriculum, but I would bet others too) they teach to stabilize impaled objects in place and to pretty much never remove them. In stabbings, car accidents, or other instances where someone becomes impaled with an object it will never be removed until the patient reaches the hospital where a surgeon will take it out and close the open vasculature to prevent exsanguination. The only exception to this rule is if the impaled object is blocking the airway or preventing performance of CPR, as these two things take precedent over bleeding control.

Does anyone think that this is a bad idea? Like would I stay alive for long enough to feel the pain? Would it fail?
- No, it's not a bad idea if you target the right areas, like the carotid artery or jugular vein. You might feel pain and stay conscious for a bit, but it should not fail if you sever these vessels

Would I have to pull out the knife?
- No, leave the knife in to ensure continuous bleeding and increase the likelihood of success
I don't mean to be rude, but please do research before suggesting things to people who are thinking about cutting themselves open. Cutting is pretty universally understood to be a poor method and suicide method failure statistics reflect this. Leaving an impaled object in place when the goal is exsanguination is also just plainly not correct. Penetrating wounds with impaled objects will pretty much always bleed more when the object is removed.

Okay, what if I just tried blood letting from the neck then? Since needles aren't as painful as knives are?

Needles are tiny so notich blood is going to be able to come out at once. It would literally take hours to bleed out via needle and by then it will clot off.

Despite what TV and movies show us, bleeding out in any way other than hitting one of a few major arteries does not work.

This is incorrect. Knife in = plugged hole. You need to pull the knife out to open the hole you just made and let the blood out.

A friend of a friend did actually succeed in killing herself this way, but I'm sure it must be an exceedingly rare method with an even more exceedingly slim rate of success. I think you would have to be in a state of hysterical desperation.

good luck with SI if you choose to go with this method. i can assure you no one could execute this properly. please look into another method OP. last thing you want to do is end up surviving with severe damage.

Man, I can't believe I'm going to contribute to this thread.

I'm not sure what is going on in your life, but if you are this desperate, then it must be something serious.

Can you get government benefits or something? Have you tried all combinations of psych drugs?

I mean living with your basic needs met and all drugged up is better than this method.

If you really have your heart set on this, then there is an artery located near your armpit.

I saw it in a movie where a lady cut a would be attacker there. So take this advice with a grain of salt.

Good luck.

There is a gore video on WPD - a crazy naked guy with a machete trying to hurt others. He did it easily (hard to watch if course). I needed courage.

A really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really bad idea

Unless you are exceptionally dedicated to your task (even then), it is very difficult to inflict enough damage on yourself to die quickly.

The chances of it being a traumatic, slow, and painful disaster for a "maybe" are quite high.

It is also very likely that you will end up making the scene more traumatic for anyone nearby,

is not a good idea.

Let's say you somehow have incredible god like ability to ignore your self preservation and cut hard and deep enough into your neck to sever the carotid. You'd be looking at a few minutes of absolute terror as you bleed to death. Not recommended. But yeah there's no way your brain would let you do that much damage to yourself. Most people aren't even able to inject themselves with needles.
Did he cut his head off like a fucking samurai?
Samurai did something even crazier. They carved their innards out and it took long time to die. Only people with extreme willpower like religious zealots or somebody totally into it could do that and in 2026 that's literally nobody.
