Been doing research on the gun thread and came up with these. Just wanting to know which one is the most reliable for a person who is new to guns. Don't want to spend a bunch of money on a gun that I can't even use. I may go test out the Mossbergs this evening to see their viability and if I can figure out how to use them. I can get a Mossberg this evening but would have to wait a few weeks for the Smith & Wesson 686 Performance Center Pro but according to my research, it has an incredibly light trigger pull and is good for beginners so maybe it's worth the wait?

Depends, do you want to do a headshot or chest shot, since they're all short they'll all work for either or. It's just a matter of how badly do you want to be disfigured if going for a headshot (if you care about that of course). If you go with a shotgun go with the shockwave since it's easier to handle and maneuver than the maverick.

I'd prefer a chest shot but if I get desperate, I'm willing to go for a head shot lmao. I'm 5'7 so I'm just wondering if it'll be awkward going for a chest shot with the shockwave. Is the shockwave pretty easy to get the hang of if you're a beginner?

Shockwave is easy to handle at that height, also contact shotgun blasts to the chest have no documented cases of survival, so if you do a chest shot use the shockwave.

Thanks, I'll go check it out at the store later. I was going for chest because I'd heard one of my favorite musicians Mark Linkous shot himself in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun and was successful. Do I have the right ammo? I saw where 00 buckshot was recommended but I know slugs were also recommended.

Either 00 buckshot or a slug will work the same.

Sorry to hijack, but I wanted to ask you a question since I am also considering head vs chest shot & I read another person saying that chest shot requires a shotgun for more accuracy/lethality and it would be more difficult/lower statistics of hitting that area accurately with a handgun. And so I wanted to ask you what your opinion is on head vs chest shot with a .357 revolver ( with longer barrel length)?

Also, I saw that a 15 degree angle through mouth pointing at brain is recommended on one of the gun threads here. Do you know how to measure that to be sure it's at the correct angle?

I'm planning above ear, bisecting both brain hemispheres.

This is ideal and is also what I'm doing.

I saw you replied to my in depth mega thread on firearms so the answer is there. But to answer it here, the reason chest shots with shotguns are better is because there's zero chance of survival if using buckshot or slugs, there is no documented case of anyone ever surviving a contact shotgun blast to the chest with those loads. There might be pain for a few seconds but that's it. If you were to use a 357 magnum I'd do a headshot via the side of the head directly above the ear. I'm doing a headshot via the side of the head directly above the ear with a 9mm carbine rifle. More info here. https://sanctioned-suicide.net/threads/how-to-properly-ctb-with-firearms-informative.215699/

I thought I saw in the firearms thread that people said to never ever do an external headshot and that through the mouth far back and aimed at brainstem is the only reliable way?

Especially with smaller ammo.

I am sure I have seen this repeated by multiple people whenever an external headshot plan is mentioned.

It is talked about in the main firearms thread on SS:

I disagree with whoever said that. Imo mouth shots are reinventing the wheel.

I've yet to see or read about an above ear shot which someone survived while I've seen a number of mouth shots people have. Bisection of brain hemispheres is known as a multiplier of lethality. Then again I would never use anything under 9mm as a handgun chamber for this.

.357 is larger than 9mm, correct?

Anxiety tangent, but questions are genuine not rhetorical:

And I'm pretty sure I have read about above ear shots causing CBT attempters to go blind instead of dying.

And couldn't the bullet still ricochet after entering?

Firearm CTB is not seeming as reliably lethal as I had thought it was :(

Even though guns are the most effective & surefire CTB method -accidental pun-, 10% survival is actually a lot of people when you consider how large the number of people who attempt with this method is.

Not everyone is able to hide a shotgun or receive more powerful ammo unavailable in stores without getting found out and having their supplies taken away from them :(

And usually the people who are the most suicidal have the least amount of control over their lives due to things like disability or controlling family members & the least amount of accessibility to CTB methods & supplies & privacy.

I also just read a nurse saying that every single patient she had who attempted pointing upward through their mouth survived with horrible effects. She said to point straight back as it would sever the spinal cord.

But if someone survived that, then their entire body will be paralyzed from that spot on down.

Also kind of a weird question, but is anyone aware of a firearm CTB user who "completed"?

I have read about SN, hanging, , train, carbon monoxide, and possibly N being posted here. But have not seen a post about someone who used a gun, posted about it, and completed CTB.

yes I've seen that case, he has glass eyes now which suggests to me his shot was fired way too far forward and literally went through his eyeballs rather than brain. I will aim about an inch in front of the top of the ear.

Based on what I've seen and read, 9mm or bigger to the side of the head will reliably do the job. Don't overthink and fuck it up. Best of luck.

I think this is why some of the "completions" that worked were because of being done impulsively and the person wasn't thinking about everything that could go wrong and causing anxiety that triggered SI & reflex reactions if they weren't aware that things could go wrong. Plus luck/chance

I also read that many "completions" were not feeling fear or had conditions where they were not able to feel fear in one study by a psychiatrist.

I've thought about this too. I think most successful attempts are literally just impulsive. Don't think too much about it and the fear won't build up. If you let the fear build up, highly likely something will go wrong.

Headshots above the ear have the highest rate of lethality because it has the least bone obstruction for the bullet, if you shoot in the mouth or up the chin there's a chance that the bullet could fragment, be ricocheted and miss the target or be redirected because there are strong bones in the pathway to the brain and brain stem from inside the mouth and up the chin. So headshots above the ear is STATISTICALLY the best option. If anyone tells you otherwise they're incorrect.

The 10% survival rate is for headshots in general (which includes homicides and accidents) and people only go blind because the aim behind their eyes instead of above their ears, had they actually aimed above the ear they would not have lived.
What about a .38 Special in your opinion?
I personally wouldn't use a 38 special, the muzzle velocity is under 1000 fps and it also has a low muzzle energy (between 180-300 ft lbs) whereas a 9mm gets 1100+fps and 400+ ft lbs of energy depending on the load. A 38 special is still better than a 22 lr though.

one thing that seems to be more and more known with suicide is how mysterious it is, you have deeply ideation filled people who never act and seemingly normal people who just grab a gun and kill themselves or hang with zero warning signs. I think it's true that over half of ctb cases are thought out and acted on within minutes and we just don't know what happens in these peoples minds or how much ideation they had.

What about a .38 Special in your opinion?
I am not a gun expert but based on the specs, will likely do the job if a JHP round is used. There are tons of videos where people shoot themself to death casually. I am pretty sure many of them did so with what is considered an underpowered caliber and with a FMJ round.
