Will a person drown in the ocean if their hands are handcuffed behind their back?

I want to end my life because of the severe suffering and pain I've experienced in recent years. Right now, I don't live alone, so I can't choose my own method of ending my life; I have to choose from the options available to me. I currently have access to the sea, and sometimes the thought crosses my mind to swim out to deep water on a mattress with fins, handcuff my hands behind my back, and sink to the bottom. How effective do you think this would be, considering that no one will be around and I hope no one will rescue me?

Will I drown, and will handcuffs alone be enough to keep my hands behind my back? Thanks

Drowning is a agonizing death, I wouldn't recommend it. Your organs will be bloated and your body will likely wash up on the shore or float. I've seen aftermaths and it's very disturbing. It's a very bad and painful way to go out, there are far better methods for you to decide. The ''Sink to the bottom'' is impossible because as i mentioned your body weight will increase due to the swelling / bloating and it'll float.

I think there is a good chance it won't work. I mean, if I found myself in that situation, I would probably just lie on my back to avoid drowning. If nobody finds you, you will still die eventually (unless you are athletic enough to swim to the shore without using your hands), but it may take days. Even if for whatever reason you can be sure that you go underwater immediately with no opportunity to surface after that, it still seems like a very shitty way to die. I don't have any experience with drowning, so that's just my guess.
One time I tried to wrap a bag around my head and handcuff myself afterwards, but I didn't succeed because I failed to tie my hands properly. In retrospect, I'm glad it failed. Not because I realized I didn't want to die, but because that way would simply be too painful for me.
You said that you can't choose your own method because you don't live alone, but if you feel like you can go to the middle of the ocean for your attempt, can't you just go somewhere else that is also private (but possibly less wet) and do whatever it is you prefer to do there? I don't want to bring up anything specific, but I think there are better methods that you can use while being on a mattress in the sea that don't involve drowning.
Basically, I encourage you to think about your options a bit more

Drowning is extremely painful and long death. I would recommend you taking either some meds or alcohol to help you relax so you will not panic.
The hands tied will probably not work right away, your survival instinct will probably make you find a way to stay afloat and it's likely you will drown of fatigue after a long time of fighting.
I think some kind of weight on your feet would help with the stay afloat problem.
But I strongly advise you to take something to either make you loose consciousness so you will not suffer for too long or maybe find another way that will be less painful.
Wish you the best of luck

Thank for replies. Is there a way to float away on a mattress and take a lot of tranquilizers—so that I'll just lose consciousness and drown painlessly?

Yeah, I don't think it's that easy to pull off. You'd have to have a bag and float on a mattress, and then do everything under stress in an awkward position above the water—something could accidentally go wrong, like dropping the handcuffs or the pills.

And it's not certain that you could do this during the day; at night, without any light, it's probably completely impossible.

We need to think more about how to do this. Just swimming that far... and putting on the handcuffs sounds simple, but in reality, it's hard.

Thanks. Got it. Yeah, it all sounds simple when you say it, but I'll probably struggle for a long time, thrashing around in agony and swallowing water. I'll have to think about it...

Drowning in the sea is very difficult because salt creates buoyancy. It's much easier to float in the sea than in a swimming pool or a lake/river.
Take this into consideration before you try anything.

I think to make this work you need a combination of cold water (as the hypothermia makes it harder for you to swim or stay afloat) and a rough sea. But even then it is probably quite unpleasant as SI will cause you to fight for a long time until you eventually die.
