I've been clean from cutting for quite a while, but lately the urges have been so so strong.
My main trigger is flare ups in my chronic illnesses and chronic pain. It may sound silly or contradictory, but when one part of your body hurts so bad all the damn time you eventually get so tired and desperate you self harm to make something else hurt to distract you from the chronic illness pain. There is also all the rage against this body and how much all the illnesses have ruined my life and how I would be a perfectly normal, happy person if I weren't disabled and even though it's "counter productive", I still hurt myself to get the rage out and have even a tiny bit of control over this body for once.
Normally I bite or hit myself which is embarassing, but it doesn't leave permanent marks, the bruises are far easier to lie about than cuts and there is far less risk of infection or needing stitches.
Lately my physical health has been the worst it has ever gotten due to some awful events in my life. The meds don't do anything, the doctors are out of ideas.. the urges to cut are so strong, I feel like there is nothing else I could do to get such horrible anguish out (I'm too afraid I will fail at CTB again so I'm not going to try that anytime soon I think)
If I was able to live alone I would have cut a long time ago, but the fear of my mother finding out is keeping me in check.. barely
Is anyone else here disabled and self harming too? Is there anything that actually helps you cope with the urges?

Self harm can come in many forms. Alcoholism is one. However, even if the feeling of control can give relief briefly, unattended forces can worsen while the effects of self harm also make things worse. It might be useful to experiment with other coping strategies that might distract. For example, gaming web sites like chess.com could offer an alternative.

First of all, I'm so sorry you're going through this, I'm physically/mentally disabled and have the urge to self harm too. Video games for me have been a decent distraction (can't cut when my hands and occupied by the console and stylus and the game itself) but I heard that putting something on your wrist like a rubber band or hair tie and snapping it against your skin helps some people (rubber bands/bracelets hurt a lot more and has helped me) though it is hard to truly recommend something because different things are right for different people but I hope you find something Topaz

Thank you for your reply, I've tried rubber bands before, but they didn't help at all. Drawing with a marker helps somewhat and using an epilator mimics the stinging sensation you get afterwards really well, though I have to wait for my leg hair to grow back to use it again of course.
I used to play video games a lot, but last year I developped some weird eye issues that make my eyes very dry and painful when I use a computer (phone is fine for some reason) and it gives me awful headaches too. I've already been to an eye doctor for it, but they didn't find anything. I might go get a second opinion on it in the future, there is just so many things wrong with me I gotta prioritize since it's so many specialists. I appreciate the recommendation though!

I'm sorry you are dealing with this too, it's nice to see I'm not alone in this though
