It doesn't devolve into an action-flick mess as often as its sequels (Neo basically lost his personality pre red pill to become the 'one'. Almost like learning the truth makes you perfect for some reason). They are also indulgent with the first film's success with stuff like the sexual dance scene and Agent smith coming back - even copying himself to hear his charming hamminess.
