Conversation is basically a private thread for you and one or a few others. Chat is more like a chatroom/DMing.

@meddle Chat is just a private chatroom. If you leave the chat section, then you don't get notified of new private chat messages until you enter the chat section again. For Conversations you get always notified of new messages.Similar threads
