Buying barbituric acid for Nembutal synthesis?

Most of the published syntheses use a condensation of some malonic acid derivative with urea. They are quite impractical for a home chemist. I don't think I've ever seen a route using barbituric acid as the precursor even though it's the parent molecule of the entire class of barbiturates.
