Dying Inside.
Mar 16, 2025

Im a hermit and have been for a long time now.
I stay indoors as much as possible and avoid people because they mostly irritate and drain me of energy.
Ive also become more frightened of going outside lately, and am paranoid that something really bad is going to happen if I go outdoors.
Sometimes I have attacks of depersonalisation and derealisation if I have to go outside, thats how bad things are nowadays.
Is anyone here the same ?

Comparatively speaking- yes. I imagine I leave the house a lot less than regular people. I think I went maybe 9-10 months last year. Only leaving the house to put the bins out!

I'm not afraid to a debilitating level. Only in certain circumstances. Social anxiety gets to me in a lot of ways. But yes, I pretty much try to stay in as much as I can now.

That said, I used to go and visit places. Covid put a stop to all that but, I'm considering maybe venturing out again. It's hard to know whether that will make me feel better or worse.

Are there things you want to do but, feel too afraid to or, are you happy where you are?

Im considering going out again because I miss being out in nature.
Springs here and summer to follow and it only makes me feel worse about stopping in all the time.
Yet, if I do go out in nice weather then I have the problem of seeing all " the normal people " , happy couples and families etc.
This just amplifies the fact that Im not like them and it makes me feel even more melancholy than I already am.
Yet if I had to choose between going out, or staying in all the time then I would definately choose to stay in.

Hermit-adjacent I'd say. I have a job, 2 days a week in office, outside of that I don't interact with anyone, no friends or relationship. Just can't/won't connect with anybody, which they say "humans are social animals", "Best thing to do is talk to someone" but I always come out of it worse. But isolation no doubt bad too. I just pick the lesser of two evils.

Yes. I leave the house so rarely that my car battery dies and I have to jump it. I used to go out a normal amount before I became ill.

I go out all the time, so not a hermit in that respect. But I am a misanthrope because most people just annoy me, so I go to parks and woods, a good day is when nobody is around. But oddly, in my dreams there's usually lots of people around and in those cases company is fine. So I guess my social needs are taken care of subconsciously. 🤷‍♂️

I've been more or less a hermit since late 2018. It's only been in the past year that I've started leaving the house again—just once a week, every Friday, for a therapy session that's mandated. I keep it as quick as possible, and even then, it's incredibly difficult. I struggle with severe anxiety attacks because of agoraphobia and PTSD, so going out takes a real toll.

Home has become my shell, and I've become the hermit inside it. It's not ideal, but it's what keeps me feeling safe.

I've been staying indoor a lot lately due to health issues. Stepping outside has become more difficult and overwhelming lately. I feel more comfortable avoiding people. Your not alone in this.. there are others who understand!

Yeah, definitely. Not really bcz I want to be, but really no choice. I haven't anywhere to go, except stores, and I'm not so fond of grocery shopping, so I try and do that as little as possible. Other than maybe a once-a-week trip to grocery stores, and sometimes other errands at the same time, I'm home.

Yes... I've only managed to go out one time so far this year...

I have this deep-seated, anxiety-based aversion to being perceived in any way by other human beings, and I get stress pulsating through me if I so much as look out a window. I also deal with the drain and exhaustion of extreme depression, which adds to the challenge.

So, I understand, and I can definitely relate to the "hermit" thing.

I am outside a lot as I like moving and I also need to escape my home at times when I get too overstimulated from all the noise there can be at times.
I also like showing my "cute self" to ppl, especially my outfits. The reactions can vary a lot depending on the day, but it's nice when ppl smile and treat you nicely and stuff because you're cute.
I had a period of being agoraphobic, though. Wasn't fun.

Usually trying to stay inside as much as possible, only exception is to walk my dog of course, but there is rarely any interaction, so that is quite nice.
Only exceptions are for meeting my best friend or my partner, though those things are planned for a while because I need to mentally prepare.
I am also not fond of being surrounded by people and it drains my energy a lot with the only exception I make is conventions since the excitement to see stuff I really like 'overrides' that worry and exhaustion for that time, but afterwards I am overly exhausted so it doesn't happen very often.

I only go out because I find myself going stir crazy if I stay inside for too long. Even then, I only walk along trials where I know I won't see many people. I also try to avoid any reflective surfaces so I don't have to see myself.
