I dropped Stardew Valley for this reason, because it got too depressing. It resembled almost everything I've ever wanted in life.

Calm, peaceful life. Nice sense of community, living in a small town in the middle of the wilderness, owning your own land, many beautiful women that like you, and having tons of friends. I remember even crying once when I played it.

I try to avoid more friendship, comfort, and romance based content. Obviously I can't avoid it all because it's in just about everything.

I try to watch and play things more chaotic and rough where comfort, friends and romance aren't the main focus.

I suppose, not exactly the life I would want but, I've noticed in say city builder games it made me happy to put (virtual) effort into something that was actually appreciated by my sims.

I've also loved some game environments. Eastshade made me feel like I had actually inhabited a new place for a while. I was sad to leave it. I enjoy that sense of returning home when you build bases in survival games too.

I've had the reverse experience actually though. I remember there was a scene in 'Spiritfarer' where the hedgehog spirit made me feel guilty for having stayed out so long collecting materials. That felt eerily like real life! That was a really incredible game. Full of emotions. I don't think I've ever cried so much at a game.

I'm probably more drawn to solitary games though, which reflects my real life. Thinking about it yeah- One of the Fallout games encouraged me to buy a new console. Then Subnautica, now I'm playing Stranded Deep. They're all kind of survive alone games. Lol.

I think I know what you mean though. I tend to avoid films that are like that. Romances or films about regular lives and families. I'll even watch the polar opposite in true crimes where partners have become abusive or murderous. They tend to reassure me of what I've potentially saved myself from.
