hello people, i'm a quiet lurker here, new member, and i wanted to post something for a long time, i couldn't decide what, my perfectionism and anxiety seems to have weakened enough to post this.

i'm 26 years old, Romanian, blah blah, i don't want to bore you with other details, for now.

this was LLM assisted, because I couldn't trust my English skills, and because it seems like, LLMs write cleaner.

here's the story, i believe it was assisted by DeepSeek V3.1 (the free version), via openrouter, a LLM proxy.

on the DeepSeek site, i have unchecked "model training" but openrouter has a different privacy policy, i hope it won't affect me in the future too much.

So, let me tell you this ridiculous story about what happened with our gas supply in March/April 2025.

1. On March 31st, my mom went to the E.on Romania office to ask about the deadline for paying her 1600 RON (~$325) gas regularization bill (for heating, hot water, and cooking). I don't know why she waited so long—apparently, she didn't want to pay early to avoid feeling "squeezed." She also didn't bother checking the paper bills or the app for details, which would've saved her this whole mess.

2. Instead of just answering her question, the company roped her into signing a new contract in her name. Up until then, she'd been paying under my grandfather's name (who died in 2014) without any issues. Shockingly, they didn't even ask for a death certificate—just her ID and signature.

3. They told her she could pay "later," but she took that to mean the due date was extended—with no proof. She assumed it moved from April 7th to some vague date two weeks later. But of course, that wasn't the case.

4. Now, because the debt wasn't officially transferred to her (or maybe it was, but the utility company doesn't care), and because ANPC (the consumer agency) might or might not take her complaint seriously (if she even bothers filing one), we ended up without gas in April 2025.

5. The total debt? Around 1600 RON (~$325), plus late fees, plus a disconnection fee (~$30)—so roughly $356 total, maybe even $400 after everything.

6. In the meantime, we've been using an electric radiator (1 kWh), which only heats one room. April isn't freezing, but it's still chilly.

7. Another potential issue? The estimates and regularizations might've added unjustified consumption to the bill. But to dispute that, my mom would have to physically check the gas meter outside—which she hasn't done yet.

8. At least our 92-year-old neighbor offered to let my mom use her kitchen starting April 1st—the same day my mom's naivety was confirmed yet again. So, thankfully, I'm not stuck eating stale or overpriced packaged food.

**Was This Just Miscommunication?**
1. I vaguely remember someone else going through something similar a few years ago. That person even tried to sue, but without audio recordings of the conversation with the company, their case failed. And they were wealthier—$400 wasn't a big deal for them, but for my mom, it's a struggle.

**When Will Gas Be Restored?**
I assume it'll come back once the old contract's debts are paid—around 1500 RON, plus fees (probably 1650-1750 RON total). This whole thing reeks of financial opportunism—now my mom has to pay:
1. Disconnection fee
2. Reconnection fee
3. Late fees (percentage-based)
4. And possibly more if the meter readings were inflated

**A Weird "Synchronicity"**
1. On April 16th, after my mom paid a 250 RON (~$60) reconnection fee, she saw a white dove (or some white bird). That's about the extent of "meaningful" signs in this mess.

**Final Update: Gas Is Back!**
1. Today, April 17th, around 3 PM, the gas was finally restored. After paying:

3200 RON (for Feb/March 2025 bills - yes just 2 months of heat)
+ 250 RON reconnection fee
Total: 3450 RON (~$780 or €700)

2. The 17-day gas-free ordeal is over. Huzzah! Life feels a bit more normal now.

3. Sure, gas stoves and gas cauldrons / boilers, release more CO2 and particulates than electric ones, but my mom says we can't afford to switch right now. Eco-friendly concerns aren't exactly a priority when you're just trying to keep the heat on.

# end of LLM assisted output.

i just wanted to warn people, regarding contracts, elderly family, or grandparents, naive mothers and so on.

also, consider making your grandparent or whoever owns your home, write a will before they die, because of notary fees, to the successors, which aren't cheap in Romania. you can look up the so called "notary mafia". anyway, it's not urgent, just remembered this random fact.

bye for now, and don't worry if you bother me with questions, or if i won't reply for a while (although i hope i will reply).

oh... shady gas company (I want to make a joke about how their gas is cheap fart but I digress)
BTW, have you tried electric blankets? They provide reasonable heat at lower cost due to heating a smaller area.

It's an interesting idea, but, I have to talk to my mom regarding the cost of electric blankets.

I'm still not employed, and not getting any income, so your message reminded me about getting an income.

My mom will still probably want to spend on heating the air, for her mental comfort I guess? Especially at the bathroom from December to May. But the harshest months are usually January to March.

Electric blankets sound like a cool solution, but my mom will keep hesitating for months even if I push her, for weeks ... Idk ...

Unless I manage to get an income, it's a long shot, but I will remember this comment, thank you.

heating the air is still useful, bathrooms below 18C feel too chilly for me... and to compensate I turn the hot water dial up a bit more... and sometimes even rotating to balance the water and air temp

Maybe Facebook marketplace sells electric blankets?

It makes sense for everyone to be vigilant regarding all transactions with any people and companies.
I've seen this same thing happen to people regarding their cellphone and internet contacts too.

It's a lost cause trying to fight or sue later.

I understand. You might want me to, lower the gas intensity, and use the electric blanket more, because gas is already not cheap in Romania.

Another problem I'm facing is that I'm using a heating cauldron from the 1970s.

It's harder to explain but it's big, made of mild steel I believe, and doesn't have electronic controls, it's all manual and works on a thermosiphon principle, without electric pumps. It's primitive, but the worst thing is that the only real thermostat is an analogue thermometer installed around 2015, that would have to have some Raspberry Pi camera streaming it to my mom's room for her to decide.

I also have a hot water storage tank, but it's entirely passive, with no electric heating elements, nor a heat source, near the water storage tank.

I also happen to live in my mom's room because it's the warmest room in the entire house, but on separate beds, haha.

I could try looking on FB marketplace, but in Romania in my area it seems less developed?

Idk if Romania even has a FB marketplace, I believe that's only a western thing? Romania is west aligned, but not all western services exist here.

I could also try Bulgarian, Hungarian, Moldovan or local Romanian used item sites, but, it's all about the price + the delivery price + and whatever my mom believes.

Some sellers only want local pickup.

Bye for now.

ahh, also, interesting that hot water just flows without a heat source... unless it is district heat or similar

Good points.

In Romania, I've heard of elderly people being scammed by, phone contracts, especially by Vodafone, Orange but even other companies. We use prepay cards for that reason, since using prepay, it's easier to control the total cost of the contract.

Gas is especially sensitive however, because it's connected to the cold of winter, and cooking, especially in Romania where most cookers use gas, sadly.

I hope it was a harsh lesson for my mom, but at least I got my message out.

Here's the principle:

"A thermosiphon (or thermosyphon) is a device that employs a method of passive heat exchange based on natural convection, which circulates a fluid without the necessity of a mechanical pump. Thermosiphoning is used for circulation of liquids and volatile gases in heating and cooling applications such as heat pumps, water heaters, boilers and furnaces."

It uses a gradient caused by convection.

Apparently that mechanical pump, has to be electric in modern, gas fired heating units.

In my 1970s case it's convection based. "Thermo siphon".

It's not district heat, but perhaps some district heat, somewhere, use a similar principle.

Bye for now.
