The parents were willfully ignorant— refusing an amniocentesis on the grounds of moral and theological ideology is irresponsible, unenligtnted, stupid and cruel and I promise you these same parents are against assisted suicide laws because of their religious beliefs.

Sympathy only for the poor suffering child in this case who lived to only suffer and die a painful death.

They could've had CVS (chorionic villi sampling) even earlier than an amnio, and prevented this travesty.

That said, I was considered advanced maternal age, and because everything seemed normal, I did not do any invasive testing. In all fairness, most people don't, unless there's a reason. A trisomy like that could happen to anyone; it's very sad.

In the end, they absolutely did the right thing. It is definitely inexcusable that the baby wasn't dosed with morphine so that he might have gone more peacefully.
