I really want to enjoy 4chan but then a flame war happens and it's ruined because of some asshole saying something horrible to someone.

Anonymity does something to people. We see it all over the internet, but the general preference of 4chan to not even have so much as usernames pushes people even further into their primality.

My personal experience is that the vast majority of people in this world could be considered 'bad' people. Most of them manage to cover it up in their daily, offline lives so they can adhere to societal norms. The internet is where the true selves come out. There is no fear of repercussions for transgressions. They can be the awful version of themselves they always longed to be.

Never made any sense to me because I'm the same person offline and online.

I've never even looked at it to be honest but, what makes it better than other image based platforms? Is it because of it's more unmoderated structure? But then, that will definitely lead to some hate speech.

I'm more curious as to why people deliberately seek out platforms with bad reputations for that kind of thing. What's the appeal over other platforms say?

Society is awful and rejects people for being autistic, bipolar, ugly, etc... If you are treated badly, it's easier to be consumed by bitterness and become a negative person yourself. And 4chan attracts any rejects. In addition to that, if you are rude and openly a bad person, not in a deceptive sort of way, not in a way that society doesn't care about, then you are also rejected.
Of course, the anonymity makes this worse too.

The main reason 4chan ends up being so toxic is because of the anonymity. When people know they won't face any real consequences for what they say, they feel free to post whatever's on their mind, even if it's hateful or offensive. On top of that, the site barely enforces its own rules, so a lot of harmful behavior goes unchecked. Put those two things together, and you get a place where racism, harassment, and general toxicity are pretty common.

Because 4chan it's where the most miserable, horrible, disgusting, and chronically online people meet up. What did you expect?

Last month I went there out of boredom, and there was a thread where some people were initially talking about what bluetooth headphones to buy, and several people were against them, saying unironically that bluetooth caused cancer. Lmao.

A mixture of the total anonymity with not even having to register an account, and just site culture in general.
Nowadays I only occasionally visit /jp/, look on /t/ if I can't find a torrent for something I want elsewhere, otherwise I mostly just lurk /drugfeel/ on /r9k/. Otherwise I prefer altchans.

4chan is never good for serious discussion, only shit flinging and trolling.

I used to enjoy /x/, the paranormal board since the theories people discussed were pretty laughable, very entertaining. Then overtime I saw it become more antisemitic where every thread had to in some way involve Jewish people being responsible for everything, it got old fast. I think they banned conspiracy talk now? Which ruins the fun imo, seeing novel ways people can surpass their own outlandishness was the good part!

On occasion I visit /ic/ the artwork and critique board, I got into it when I wanted to get better at drawing. It's a very strange board, people are either making threads grovelling about how they will always be a beg(beginner artist) and that they are NGMI or maulding at another person, calling them a beg. I think 90% of it is trolling since the vast majority of posts are rehashes on the same rage bait posted again and again.

If your interested in a good chansite then I highly recommend lainchan, people there have real discussions about interesting topics. /vis/, /hum/ and /drg/ are always a treat to browse once in a while. It might be my favourite site!
