Whoops - I apparently am NOT a supportive girlfriend...

My boyfriend texted me earlier that a friend of a friend ctb'd (not that my bf used that term). Anyway, his friend was drunk at a bar, so my bf was off to pick him up.

Instead of offering sympathy, etc, I asked what his method was. Couldn't even help myself. Words were out before I realized.

BF said that my reaction wasn't supportive (fair enough)...I tried to recover by saying I was trying to understand what happened...but he didn't buy it.

Whoops.

The variations of grief clearly exist, and i don't think you necessarily understood at the time that your boyfriend would take it harshly. We all individually have a morbid curiosity of wanting to know, and sometimes in unfortunate scenarios we make them explicit to someone — even to our significant other. You're the closest one to your boyfriend (besides the exception of his family), you should just let him breath a little bit. Let the passing of his friend sulk in.

You're a supportive girlfriend. Don't let his comments dismiss that.

Totally okay to laugh!! It was seriously that scenario....he tells me he got some bad news, this friend of a friend killed himself and the friend is at the bar and really messed up and so on....as soon as he stops talking, I jump in..."Do you know what his method was?". I have gallows humor, so him telling me I wasn't helping made me giggle...which apparently ALSO wasn't helping. LOL

LOL wow sorry this made me laugh as well. I also have a very dark humor about suicide that my ex does not in the slightest. I can see how that question would slip when you were presented with someone having killed themselves. It is a topic that is on your mind a lot so of course it would spark curiosity. I suppose if someone doesn't know that is on your mind regularly it would seem odd to them that you would have such fascination
