I think it's a bit odd that they are saying that people care. It's presumptuous at best and while it "might" be true, we can never fully know if someone really cares just based on what one says. Actions do speak louder than words and so far, from what the OP of that reddit post posted, it seems like his family didn't really care as much and are rather distant. Some comments are good so far, especially about how it would be more selfish for others to expect them to stay longer so they don't feel sadness.

I don't think solely living for others is living at all. In the end death welcome to every human being, and could at any moment. Is a suicide any more selfish than someone who loves daredevil activities? How about the people that choose to have very poor nutrition smoke drink do drugs and all the other things that can lead to early death? People put suicide under a magnifying glass because it is abrupt, but in some ways it is more merciful to end things quickly then it is to put people through decades of self harmful behaviors. I don't think it's any less selfish to keep ourselves on this planet just to appease others, as in the end it will reflect in our minds and behaviors just how depressed we are.
