I read this quote somewhere:

All works are being done by the energy and power of nature, but due to delusion of ego people assume themselves to be the doer.

I agree with this quote, I think it suggests that people think they have control over their lives, but some random fate is determining everything. Just like how we can't stop bad things happening to us as we have no knowledge of the future and we cannot control the circumstances we were born into.
We convince ourselves that we have control over our lives otherwise we would feel powerless. I think CTB is the only way we can become a 'doer' by overcoming our survival instinct and taking our inevitable fate of death into our own hands.
