Tried charcoal burning - didn't work

I set light to 2 disposable barbecues (400g of lumpwood charcoal in each). When the flames had died down I placed them in my boot on paving stones, opened one of the back seats a few inches and sat in the driver seat with the doors and windows closed. I drank 2 bottles of wine and some cider, took 2 sleeping tablets and drifted off to sleep.

I woke up in the same position 4 hours later feeling fine - how disappointing! I went to hospital the next day and my blood CO level was only 9.1%.

I'm still alive and my car stinks, which is annoying.

Any ideas what might have went wrong? I don't think I opened that back seat enough, which effectively trapped the air in the boot, which might have meant the oxygen in the boot depleted and the barbecues went out.

When I reclined the drivers seat I think I might also have pushed the back seat even more closed.

If I were going to try that I think would use a tent, and seal it as tightly as possible.

And I'd add more charcoal bricks.

Even a bed tent might work, if you wanted to set it up in your own bedroom:

Thanks, think I've gone off the idea now though. It's a lot of work / planning and finding somewhere to light the barbecues without drawing attention to yourself is tricky. And not guaranteed success obviously. I need something easier to implement and with a great chance of success. Partial hanging is probably the way to go.

Did you tell them what happened? CO levels don't seem like something they would check on their own.

How did you explain the possible cause of CO blood toxicity to the hospital doctors without revealing an obvious suicide attempt?

I just said I had a barbecue and then put them in my car afterwards without realising the danger. They did ask if it was an attempt to which I said no. They're generally too busy to ask too many questions.
